They have great chicken stew. They have mustard base, ketchup base, and vinegar pepper sauce. The guy who runs the place is really friendly (Jay, I think).

impossible to point out a "best" BBQ place. Maybe most consistent.
I prefer molasses based sauce, where most around the NC area prefer the vinegar base. In SC it seems that mustard based sauces are more common.
I have had GREAT meat from a few different places, only to find it too tough or fatty the next go-round. Heat, humidity, amount of spice rub, pigs diet, etc.. has so much affect on the taste.
BAD BBQ, that's worth noting because it is so hard to screw it up.

Also get their fried okra. They do a light panko breading and fry it whole, outstanding.
Fresh Air in Jackson, GA is good as well but not close to 75 so its out of the way for just about anyone.
Heard alot of folks say the Smoking Pig and Circle something? In pendleton maybe? are good. Need to check them out for myself next time im down that way.

The very best of all the great BBQ joints is Maurices BBQ in Columbia. I have tried them all and hands down his hash & rice, and BBQ pork is good enough to die for! Always stop by on my way to the upstate. Don't want to hang too long...it's still cooterville, you know.

Pulley bone fried chicken is excellent. For me Jackie Hite's BBQ in Batesburg Leesville is a little better bbq than Shealy's. Friday at lunch pork skins. Maurice's in West Columbia and Little Pigs on Alpine Road in Columbia. Brown's BBQ in Kingstree.

Clemson grad is one of the owners. Incredible smoked meats. The pulled pork is sweet, smoky, moist. The sauces are excellent. The side dishes are also excellent. I love my q and this is one of the best.

Wise's, west of Newberry on US 76. Only open Friday & Saturday. Great mustard base sauce & they leave the pulled pork in decent sized pieces, not all chopped up too fine like many do. Also great ribs & barbecue chicken.
Jackie Hite's in Leesville definitely has better barbecue than Shealy's, although Shealy's has great fried chicken and wonderful sides. On Friday's, Hites lays out the whole hog on the hide, and you can choose from the ham, rib, shoulder, belly, whatever meat you prefer, & that is a heckuva spread.
I have eaten at many of the others mentioned, including Maurices, Sconyers & Browns, but if I am looking just for great mustard base pulled pork, Wise's is my favorite.

Maurice's father, Big Joe Bessinger invented the original mustard based sauce. You want the best sauce and best BBQ anywhere...go see Maurice. Someone told me that there are 14 of locations in the Columbia area... You don't have that many locations if people didn't love the Q.

I wouldn't say he invented mustard sauce. Mustard based sauces in SC comes from the Germanic settlers in the 18th century...

Beat me to this post. I love Wise's. That mustard sauce is right up my alley! I live in Minnesota and my dad sends a bottle up every so often. Love pouring it on my own smoked pork.
I think it is Shealy's or Hogs Heaven has the best hash that I have had.
By the way Minnesota BBQ is not great. But I did find a place in Denver when I was in CO that did it right. Great BBQ. And Greens and fried okra. No you cannot find these across the country.

My favorite BBQ place is Westwood BBQ in Hartsville even though their pork BBQ is good, but not my favorite. Their liver hash is the best and fried chicken is awesome. It is on my way to the coast and I never pass by without stopping.
521 BBQ in Indian Land serves my favorite ribs.
