Chapel Hill went from 63k to 50.5k seats at Kenan in 2018?

Aug 1, 2019, 12:30 PM

I started researching the UNC-Ch stadium after seeing the “are we going to paint CH orange” post. A 20% reduction in seating? AND they are going to Turf this year? My goodness, it must be important to Roy that everyone knows that Chapel Hill is NOT a football school.

It’s an ingenious strategy. Their stadium will instantly go from 2/3’s empty to half empty.

They have conceded that Dook is the best football school

in the greater Triangle area.

Not a fan of turf, but the reduction in seating was probably

a smart move for them. They removed all of the bleachers (except for student section) and replaced them with full seats. How often was UNC really selling out a 63k stadium anyway? I'd rather see 51k in a full stadium than 12k empty seats.

If I ran the world I would ban turf for all sporting events except putt-putt.

The satdium seats are a mistake in Keenan. You need wider

rows to handle the additiona depth of a stadium seat but they just used the existing concrete layout.

The result is knees in the back of the seat in front of you and absolutely no easy way to get out of the row without everybody getting up.

It is terrible.

6,000 - 7,000 seats not too long ago and the AD got criticized heavily for doing so. His logic was more and more watched on TV now and by and large the students didnt come as much. He supplemented the loss with new box/suite seating. Now, he looks like a genius and everyone supports it. He's actually doing the same at Rupp Arena right now.

And I agree with it. Considering the rise in ticket prices,

why should the average Joe have chit seats.
