Gents,
I took the kids camping last week in the woods behind my house. I was sleeping on the ground, using a super old/cheap foam mat. I flat-out couldn't sleep. As Danny Glover says, "I'm getting too old for this shiit."

Looking for recomendation:
must be economical
weight not a major issue
nothing #### like an air mattress
I like the idea of a hammock.

I think I'm still a few years away from that, but yes, this is the ultimate goal. Anything to get my son off of the dang computer/tv/xbox/ipad. smdh

I'll give it a few more years. He is really big and has potential to be a good helper with hard manual labor (not CS02).

There are too many in the world as is, and the lack of common sense routinely displayed by these people quite frankly scares me. I would rather deal with a crackhead than someone who wants to take a picture for social media every 30 seconds.

I am committed to preventing him from becoming one.

Daughter has no interest in "screens". She is more than happy playing with the cats, or coloring, or building things all day long.

Son is the exact opposite. He has fun at baseball and had a blast camping. If I turn my back for 1 second while we're around the house, it's a given that he has found a "screen" somewhere to sit in front of. I WILL break him of that.

This is another instance where the wife is a major offender.

Hammock is not so great in cooler weather.

u get cold-but syndrome because of the compressed insulation...underquilt fixes this, supposedly....I haven't used it yet to kangfirm.

I've had a Thermarest for years, and it still does the job

Apr 9, 2018, 12:00 PM

but maybe not so much in line with your economical criteria. Maybe something like this:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B078NX56VY/ref=s9_acsd_topr_hd_bw_bEGxR_c_x_1_w?pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_s=merchandised-search-4&pf_rd_r=6XESSP8NDNGD9EST5NTV&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_p=34d7ef38-de19-552e-9681-2d19e7853ad3&pf_rd_i=3401781

ringofhonor-rhtig.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

My Thermarest has long ago ceased to be functional.

Apr 9, 2018, 12:31 PM

That's fine, it's not like we were on friendly terms.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I has a hammock, only camped in in juance

Apr 9, 2018, 12:01 PM

but as long as weather complies, I will not tent again.

I've since purchased the rain fly as well as a light underquilt, so weather might not actually be an issue.

Problem w/ that is multiple people....and w/ the underquilt & rainfly, now it's taking up almost as much room in the pack as a tent.

Also, I've gone camping in places w/ no trees....which adds a bit of complexity to hammocky thangs.

I also have an REI Stratus pad. insulated, has bolstered sides so this fatty don't roll off onto one of the kids, and pakcs down smaller than a nalgene bottle.

today is the last day of the member sale @ REI, FYI, YWIA

The only sore knee that Greenr gets from banging is his high-knee.

I did in an old-school hammock. I stuck my feet through the mesh and gave her all I had. Not too bad, I must say.

I've never used them, but they're a legit brand w/ decent rep...and these prices are pretty good compared to elsewhere, PLUS you get a pillow to bite down on

Apr 9, 2018, 12:27 PM

I can't sleep in a hammock. If you've hiked a while and you've already got a questionable back, a hammock can be torture. But, you may be into torture.

If you're car camping, I don't understand your issue with a nair mattress, to me it don't be any easier to sleep. You might consider a cot. The missus likes her cot when camping, although bit coolish on the backside I would think if it's cold whether.

Some folks swear by thermarestes, I swear at them. Little better than a foam mat. Z-rest the same thing.

Other than that, stay home.

Pads will not cut it unless you're a kid.

Apr 9, 2018, 1:40 PM

I used to use pads, but after 30, they became painful to sleep on. Just get a good quality, durable, air-inflated pad. Can be a pain to blow it up, but that's WAY better than sleeping on a pad and totally worth it.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-15yr.jpgringofhonor-tiggity-110.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I go with an ENO double nest.

Apr 9, 2018, 1:24 PM

The bug net and rain fly are a must. especially in SC.

I've also got a Mountain HardWare light path 2, I believe it is, that I use if I tent camp. It's a two-person, bivy style, so cramped if you prefer dome-style.

I don't carry a sleeping pad because I don't like losing the extra space in my pack.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I was thinking about grabbing the bug net

Apr 9, 2018, 1:30 PM

we tend to do 'cooler' weather camping...March/April, Oct/Nov...we're talking abot 2nd weekend in May, which will be the latest we've gone. Normally, the bugs aren't THAT much of an issue

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

We do some short trips out to Congaree, so the net is
