We're $23 trillion in debt, and have a $700+ billion dollar

Jun 12, 2019, 5:16 PM

deficit. Mr. Stewart, who should we take money from to give it to the 911 first responders?

That would be my response. Should we take it from medicaid and let poor people die? Medicare and let old people die? Food stamps and let poor children starve? National defense and enable another country to attack us? Highway and infrastructure and make traffic and gridlock and commerce worse? Agricultural subsidies and let food prices climb and farmers go broke? Social security and make old people poor? HUD and kick thousands from their subsidized homes? The EPA and let animals, wildlife, and habitat die? The Dept of Education and make our children even less prepared to be productive workers? Veterans and dishonor their sacrifice?

We should be asking those questions without him even asking for whatever his cause is. How do we even pay for what we've already promised to everyone else? Or should we just print it, tack it on to our debt, and just let your kids, grand kids, and great-grandkids pay for it?

He missed a great opportunity to really dress them down.

Jon, we're broke. That's your answer.

Being broke ain't no problem.

Well, if we were +$700 billion each year in the green

Jun 12, 2019, 7:20 PM

I wouldn't be as worried. This is what people don't get with understanding "rich" people or the government for that matter. You can make $4 billion a year. But if you have to spend $4 billion to make that $4 billion, you're broke.

Exxon, people complain about "obscene" profits of what, $10-13 billion? Well when you SPEND $100 billion and earn $110 billion in revenue, that leaves you with your $10 billion profit. That's 10 freaking percentm maybe 13% or 15% in a good year. What if Little Suzzie sold lemonade and each cup cost her $0.09 to make, and she sells it for $0.10, and makes a penny and a 10% profit.....that sux. Apple makes a 35%+ profit regularly and not a peep of complaints.

We can't balance a budget without cuts. We can't balance a budget without entitlement cuts. There is no feasible tax solution to get us back to a balanced budget, even with no new spending and only baseline increases.

So Jon's frustrated, and he has a very good cause. So does everyone really. Tons of worthy causes. We're just broke. So yeah, being broke is bad, debt or no debt.

Are you kidding with the national defense thing, or no?

Jun 12, 2019, 10:42 PM [ in reply to We're $23 trillion in debt, and have a $700+ billion dollar ]

Because that’s an absurd statement. We could cut military spending to $0 besides salaries, and still not have to worry about a mainland attack for several decades.
