The Clemson "Tigers" are named after Princeton

Feb 13, 2019, 10:42 AM

....because Princeton was admired as the most powerful football team at the time Clemson fielded our first team.

The Yale Bulldogs, later became a powerhouse, but fortunately it wasn't the most powerful in the years leading up to the formation of the Clemson team.

Haha...

All of those early year “claimed” titles...

Feb 13, 2019, 9:14 AM

How does that work? You just say you were champions? I think our 1900 team (or something around then) was undefeated under Heisman. Why don’t we “claim” that year?

1900, 1981, 2016, 2018????

"poll" that ranked you #1 that year. It doesn't matter if 9 out of 10 polls, including the AP and UPI, ranked a different team #1, as long as there's 1 that had you #1 you can claim it. It doesn't even matter if the ranking didn't exist until 2000 and it retroactively ranked you #1 for the 1930 season, you can still claim it.

That's how Bama does it at least, and several of their claimed titles are ridiculous.

Too bad it’s not conference championships, SC would’ve at least gotten a mention. Oh well.
