Any Clemson atlanta united fans here?

Thoughts on the game?

Well... I live in Atlanta and the soccer fans here

Dec 8, 2018, 4:04 PM

are all excited about this team and this game tonight but sorry I still cannot wrap my head around this game. It's boring to watch and it's a socialist sport. I do not get a sport that it can be a 0-0 tie and someone still wins.. It's stupid. I love to pick with my soccer co-workers about this.... Of course I am just playing with them but they get so offended and bent out of shape... LOL! :)

I’ve never understood the whole “socialist sport” thing. It seems like an ignorant thing to say.

yeah soccer is actually far from socialist

The euro leagues don't have anything close to a salary cap and the big teams get all the best players.

I'm no soccer expert as i never watched much until my daughter was born in 2011 and thought I'd better figure out soccer since she'd probably play. I was excited to get an MLS team in the south and have followed Atlanta United since they got the team. They're fun to watch even if you're not a huge soccer fan. I'm hoping for Atlanta to go up a couple of goals early so I can relax while watching. I get a lot more nervous watching soccer than Clemson football since I pretty much expect us to find a way to win every game we play.

You figure Atlanta will win but Portland's got some speedy - and very physical - CM's and teams that can give ATL trouble can run with Almiron and rough him up some, and they're exactly the sort of bunker-and-counter team that is made to give ATL some problems.

Still think it doesn't matter. When ATL is playing well it doesn't really matter who you are...heck, even Juventus was struggling to control Almiron and Martinez in that building in the All-Star game.

Still is annoying that Tata's off to Mexico, Almiron's off probably to Newcastle, and the Euro-vultures are circling hard for Martinez too, so it's probably back to Square 1 for ATL next year, but when you're as good as Atlanta is, I guess it's predictable the big dogs are going to come in for what you have. Especially when you're building with young players that have some extremely high resale value, or you've got a coach like Tata.

For those who don't know or understand the game, though, Atlanta United is a great place to start learning. You wanna watch great - and usually high-scoring - American soccer, playing in front of 70K insane fans in the best and most modern stadium in the world? Atlanta doesn't like 0-0 draws any more than you do, I promise you...Atlanta is built on speed, speed, and more speed...and pure and relentless aggression. Goals will be scored. And the brutes are gonna get entertained. It's part of the brand.

Arthur Blank has really done himself proud with this team, which is even turning heads across Europe. There's actually only 18 teams in the world - the world! - that average more per game (53,002) than Atlanta United does...and they're the truly big boys like the Manchesters or Arsenal in England, AC Milan in Italy, and Borussia Dortmund in Germany.

Atlanta United actually beats defending EPL champs Liverpool - Liverpool! in attendance.

To say ATL has shocked everybody with United is...putting it mildly.

When you know how to watch the game

Dec 8, 2018, 5:17 PM

Soccer is an incredible game. At the higher levels, you can see what's building long before the result, from half the field, or further out. It's by far the most difficult sport to officiate because you're tasked with noting fouls within the flow of play and don't want to remove an advantage...and yet, if it's egregious foul, you have to note the player and issue a card at the next stoppage. One thing's for sure, you keep in shape!

Atlanta have done 'square one' like no side I've ever seen. That's a credit to ownership, management, and vision. That said, reflecting to when MLS first started, it was, frankly, a horrible product...totally unwatchable for me. The talent now, is remarkable and, despite the players Quozzel mentioned, it's because Americans can now play the game. In 1990, despite Bruce Murray's contribution, not so much. ;)

Yeah. The core of ATL is actually American guys - Darlington Nagbe, Greg Garza, Jeff Larentowitz, Brad Guzan - and you'd certainly expect 'em to stick. Even if Almiron moves on ATL's pretty good without him and I'm hearing L20 million - twenty million pounds, which translates into about $25 million! - for Almiron's transfer fee...so Atlanta will be able to afford a pretty durn good replacement #10 for him. Still dunno if people really understand just how good Almiron is, though. He's as fast as Gareth Bale, and those 70-yard runs of his and ability to drive the ball at you can completely unhinge a back line. He's going to be missed, badly.

Still, when you've got a chance to play in front of 70K every week, and get paid designated player dollars, for a top-flight organization like ATL, there's going to be some interesting takers. You figure even top European guys will pick up the phone if ATL calls.

Well said.

I've been loosely following United this year as I've never really been a fan of the MLS. I mean, I'll catch almost every Bayern match, but I've tried to make it point to watch United when I'm not busy. Since Atl United was announced and I decided I'd have a 2nd team, I have to say I love watching Almiron, Martinez, Gressel play. The style of play that Tata has brought to the team makes for great and entertain football.

But knowing that he's leaving and and the uncertainty of how the club will change is frustrating. The possibility that some of the good players will eventually be poached, makes it hard to really invest emotionally in the team, to be honest.

That said, I do think United is the best team in the MLS this year, but for me, the thing that is yet to be seen is if they can win despite the fact that they are a major sports team based in Atlanta. It's a cursed city for sports I swear. I'm hopefully about tonight, yet ready for some typical Atlanta disappointment.

Not a soccer fan but serious question. What’s with the name United? Wouldn’t we just be Clemson since that’s the name of the school. I saw Clemson united on something and can’t figure it out.

It was probably a local youth club

United gets used in soccer like no other word...other than 'flop'!

It's a term that's often used to denote a soccer club, specifically one that's formed from a merger of two clubs. Man U popularized it and it's been something that's caught on. Even Clemson uses it for our team.
