Stanford’s mascot is a Tree

Oct 17, 2019, 9:58 PM

What brainiac came up with that idea?

Actually the mascot belongs to the band. The sports mascot is the color 'Cardinal' and they don't have a mascot that compares to our Tiger.

I was at the game when we played them in the Gator Bowl. They had the tree decorated with Christmas decorations. During pregame, their band crawled out of the tunnel. Some of the band members had ferrets crawling around their shoulders. Their band uniforms were all mismatched. I had never seen anything like it. All of the fold from South Carolina were in shock.

I was at that Gator Bowl and our seats were right nest to the Stanford Band seats. I was in Tiger Band the last year the Busbees were worn (the Bearskin-like headgear like the British Royal Guard wears.) Their band put on a different type of show at half time, but up in the stands they just sat around for the most part. We could look across at our band and the they were constantly doing something. I was about five seats over from their band and one girl had a lab rat on her shoulder. She asked me what we thought of the animal, and I told everyone around me(including my wife) "Look, she has a date tonight!"
She did not say another thing the rest of the game.

Was there as well and will never forget seeing that band next to ours. I understand it’s their gimmick but they looked like hobos and especially pathetic next to our crisply dressed band.

"Scatter Band"

Oct 18, 2019, 7:46 AM [ in reply to Re: Stanford’s mascot is a Tree ]

Stanford has what's called a Scatter Band. They're known for being irreverent, provocative, controversial, and fiercely independent. They're also incredibly annoying. Most of all, without exception they an outrageously inflated sense of self-importance.

UVA used to have a scatter band. I hate(d) them. They were constantly in hot water with their administration and with the ACC. 15 years ago a wealthy alumnus singlehandedly funded the formation of a traditional marching band to replace them. The scatter band tried to hang on for a few years, but mercifully ceased to exist altogether in 2011. Good riddance to bad rubbish.

I mean to have a mascot of a Native American is a testament to their strength, resilience, and bravery. I would be honored if I were them. I prob have some native in me but I won’t take those #### dna tests.

Looked it up and was surprised to find out the actual Redwood “El Palo Alto” is over 1,000 years old.

Quite impressive!

Stanford does not have an official mascot

Oct 18, 2019, 12:03 AM

The Stanford Tree is the Stanford Band's mascot and the unofficial mascot of Stanford University. Stanford's team name is "Cardinal", referring to the vivid red color (not the common songbird as at several other schools), and the university does not have an official mascot.

More on the tree;

Still would be amusing if they picked the the Steaming Manhole or the French Fry as a mascot.

They officially don't have a mascot. Even though we see that tree. The tree is just a member of their band. They used to be Stanford Indians until the 1979's sometime, but they scrapped that.
