Tried the hard stuff at practice one day Copenhagen. It is one of the few times I wanted to die as quickly as possible. Some spitting is habit too. Lol But most guys have something in their mouth requiring them to spit. I would say most have in the shell sunflower seeds.
I remember a former KC Royals SS use to have a tooth pick in his mouth during games.
But I don't think it is stupid!!

They have a bad taste in their mouth over sucking at football and/or basketball and having to play a third level sport like baseball .

Playing industrial league softball way back when and watched guys spitting every 20 seconds. They didn't spit all day long but as soon as they got to the ball field they have to spit repeatedly.
Just a habit.

In football, on the first day, you learn to tackle by keeping your eyes on the belly of the ball carrier.
In basketball, you learn to receive the ball in ready position so you can dribble, pass, or shoot.
In baseball, you learn to spit.
It's that simple, really.
