That’s an excellent perspective. Less than 35% of underclassmen that declare early don’t even get drafted. The NFL is an uphill battle if you get drafted much less trying to make it as an UDFA (undrafted free agent). I’d like to see this as a function of year. It used to seem like only exceptional talent would leave early. Whereas now it is the norm for reasonably talented JRs after a reasonable season.

So that’s 65% that do get drafted.

It's possible factors can be involved other than thinking they are draft worthy. Academic status, financial situation at home and other unknown to us factors can be the driving force. Bad advice and believing their talent is greater than it actually is are probably the two factors leading to their not meeting expectations in the draft.

I want to know the actual number of UFA's that make a roster. Being a UFA is better than being drafted in the 6th or 7th round because you usually sign shorter contracts which if you make the team and become a commodity can transition into a lot more money quicker than the guys who will sign 4 year deals with a 5th year option that got drafted at the back of the draft. Though it is much harder to make a team as a UFA because the draft picks are under contract and teams want to use the guys they actually have to pay. UFA's take the road less traveled but if they can make it can turn it into a lucrative offer much sooner. Artavis has a big year this year and I can see him making the team because he did good things last year in the off season. He was able to stick around the organization so that has to say something.

How many would've gone undrafted again next year?

Apr 29, 2018, 9:44 AM

Maybe they are doing exactly what they wanted to do.
