1850’s American Party is alive and well

The national conversation has finally come full circle, back to 1850’s style xenophobia embodied by the America Party aka the Know Nothing Party.

Back then, the familiar complaints written about in American “Patriot” Party newspapers were about having to deal with Paddy and Bridget, the Irish Papist drunks who were sending American money to Rome.

Because the cheap labor was killing the poor by driving the wages down and working for more than the poor could get in government benefits.

Read a great book about this by one of my favorite writers Stephen Ambrose

Nothing Like It In The World

Incredible stories of how Chinese and Irish labor, as well as defeated confederate soldiers built the fist infrastructure that truly connected the country. What a massive undertaking.
