Mickey,

It seems at almost every position when a Clemson kid gets selected in NFL draft and even some that are not selected but sign as undrafted Free Agents (Adam Humphries) they stick. The numbers bear that out as years ago CU was down to around 20 guys on NFL rosters. I believe the number was around 40 on 2017 opening day rosters. The exception is at O-line. I believe there are only (3) former CU players (Chris Hairston, Isaiah Battle, Brandon Thomas) on NFL rosters.

When Robbie Caldwell 1st arrived at Clemson, I thought he was doing an outstanding job. Getting the most from both individual players and the unit as a whole when we really did not have blue-chip athletes at O-line.. But those days are gone-recruiting is UP on the O-line.

Production and accolades at collegiate level sure been there......but not translating to the next level.

2017 NFL draft, 2-year starter, All-ACC center Jay Guillermo goes undrafted. He is not even offered free agent contract and retires from football.

2018 NFL draft. Tyrone Crowder. Coming out of high school, Crowder was highly regarded, has all the measurables, was a 3 year starter at CU, 3 time All-ACC and 3rd team All-American and last week, goes undrafted. Taylor Hearn 2 year starter, goes Undrafted. That makes 3 multi year starters on an O-line that has competed for National Championships and they go Undrafted?? I dont get it !!

I also heard Mitch Hyatt, who was #1 or #2 O-tackle in country coming out of high school was given a 3rd round grade and that big reason why he is returning for his senior year.

I am sorry but Robbie Caldwell has got to be held accountable for this lack of success.

Your thoughts?

GO TIGERS,

Bill

Bill,

Clemson hasn’t signed a bunch of five-star offensive linemen, but they have recruited better there under Caldwell. I really don’t care about the NFL except for the perception and how it affects recruiting.

I care much more about the production at Clemson. The offense has set a ton of records under Caldwell. Bradley Chubb said last year the Clemson offensive line was the best he played against. The group is not made of a bunch of stars, but they have been extremely productive and they have won a ton of games and titles. That’s good enough for me.

Mickey,

I have three questions for you; first how do you look at the running back situation, is this going to be thunder and lightning 2.0; second do you see Carmen starting right away; and last do you see us landing basketball transfers Sacha Killeya-Jones from Kentucky or any other and do you feel we are capitalising on our success from this year in recruiting because I'm not?

Stephen

Stephen,

I think Clemson is good at running back, but not elite. Ettiene is an electric runner but needs to improve in some areas to become a complete back. Feaster still looks he has lost some quickness and needs to lose a few pounds in my opinion. Choice is solid and fairly dependable, but this is not an elite unit.

I don’t see Carman starting right away. Hyatt, Simpson, Falcinelli, Pollard, and Anchrum should be the starters. I do think Carman has a big upside and I would anticipate him avoiding a red-shirt this season.

At this point, Clemson is in Killeya-Jones’ top ten, but I don’t believe the Tigers are a huge factor. I have heard UNC is a likely landing spot.
