Email Bag

Several readers have asked for more email bag days, so I have decided to publish them at least a couple of days a week. In this format, we will publish your comments and answer your questions. To submit a comment or questions, please email me at mickeyplyler@hotmail.com.

Mickey,

Did you have any sense that had Clemson played this game a month prior the outcome or at least competitive nature would have been different? Taking nothing away from Alabama, It seemed we lost our edge to me.

Still, it takes perspective of age to appreciate just how great a year this has been. Grateful for the enormous effort and all the successes we have enjoyed. Most importantly, I’m grateful these players have been treated with respect and have a foundation from which to begin the next chapter of life.

Lib

Lib,

I am not sure what happened but lean towards giving Alabama credit. It’s hard to do, but sometimes you have to tip your hat to the other team. Alabama held a bitter taste in its mouth for 350 days. They didn’t like what happens in Tampa and were extremely motivated to make sure it didn’t happen again. Also, it was clear Clemson couldn’t stretch the field and Alabama was able to jam the box and attack the line of scrimmage.

Mickey,

I must admit I didn’t see Ray Ray or Van Smith leaving early. What in the world could they be thinking? Thanks.

Chris

Chris,

I personally believe neither of these players will be picked in the first couple of rounds, but what has happened now is guys often decide they wouldn’t improve draft status by returning. For example, McCloud isn’t going to get any taller by staying. In his case, I would have come back and played cornerback. To me, there is nothing he does better than Artavis Scott, and I said on my radio show several times that I felt Scott made a mistake by leaving early. As it turned out, he wasn’t drafted.

I don’t blame anyone for not wanting to put their body through another year of college football when a paycheck in the NFL might be an option. Also, I understand anyone that thinks a chance at pro football is more fun than another year of school.

I just want each guy to make a wise choice and an educated decision. Each year about 30% of the players that declare early go undrafted. Unlike some of those guys, I would think a senior year would have some value.

Finally, many players now come to school with a mindset of staying for three years. I don’t think McCloud or Smith had brilliant careers, but the three-year mindset is in vogue.

Mickey,

I excited about this basketball team but am scarred through years of heartache in basketball. I feel the same way about Zion. Please don’t wake me.

Alvin

Alvin,

Like you, I have witnessed some bad basketball over the years. Put me down for 45 years of mostly bad memories. However, I like this team. They can win in different ways. They are very experienced.

As for Zion, in recruiting you never know, and there is time for some school to change his mind, but for now, Clemson should feel very good about his commitment on January 20th.
