Traditional Thanksgiving dinner planning

6

Nov 7, 2023, 1:54 PM

man, I want some new sides to go with turkey, dressing, gravy

I got - maple roasted carrots, creamed spinach and sweet potato crunch.

I am not a fan of baked Mac and cheese - it just gets too dry for me. Mac and cheese outta da box is better. LOL.

Anybody got something unique? Please no green bean casserole.

It's more of an entree than a side, but Bologna cake with Mustard/Mayo icing is always a big hit with us.

Could be classified as a dessert, too, I suppose.

We did a practice run on Thanksgiving last night, as a matter of fact.

Mrs. and I will be doing it alone this year, so we decided to do German with rouladen, spätzle, and red cabbage. Mrs. made rouladen last night in order to get her recipe down and it turned out excellent. We did potato pancakes instead of the spätzle because that's very time-consuming to do from scratch.

This in no way helps you out with a suggestion, but I did feel the need to brag on the Mrs. because it turned out so phenomenally.

#jealous. Rouladen is the bomb!***

Mommas Squash Casserole

6

Nov 7, 2023, 2:10 PM

squash casserole

4 cups cooked squash (or 2 cans) drained
1 small can sliced water chestnuts
1 finely grated carrot
1 sweet onion chopped
1 small jar chopped pimento drained
1 can cream of chicken soup
1/2 pint sour cream
1 stick of butter melted
1 package Pepperidge Farms herd dressing mix

In a mixing bowl, season squash with salt and pepper to taste. Add carrot, onion, pimento, water chestnuts, soup, and sour cream. Mix well.

In another bowl, mix melted butter and dressing mix.

Cover the bottom of a 9x9 casserole dish with 1/2 the dressing mix. Add squash mix and spread until even. Cover top with the rest of dressing mix.

Bake at 375 for 25-30 minutes or until center reaches 165.

Little different than the usual.

I'm going to grill asparagus tossed with olive oil, salt, pepper, and garlic.

If you want to make mac 'n cheese that's soupier than baked, just make a mornay sauce and fold in pasta.

Consider using cavatappi, rotini, or shells in lieu of elbows.

way too many recipes and yeah, it is okay, but nothing good ol' stove top Mac and cheese. I am being honest here. I have never had baked Mac and cheese anywhere that I liked. I think most people just put up with it.
