Work kweshun for the Lunge (semi-SRS)
Nov 6, 2013, 2:17 PM
|
|
Say you had a defined amount of work to complete by Thanksgiving, and that that timeframe was based on the time it took to complete prior similar work.
But since having done prior similar work, you're on a roll - you've streamlined your work flow substantially, figured out a few ways to make to software being use help you out and work faster....etc.
Say you could potentially get the given amount of work done by NEXT week (even with an inordinate amount of time spent lunging)....Do you
1) Finish up the work real quick, and be all like "Ta-DAHahhhh" to you supervisor
2) Finish up the work real quick, and lay low til TG, or
3) Spread that work out evenly over the course of the next 2.5 weeks
There is nothing hypothetical about this.

Do they have more work for you

Or are they planning on laying you off again once you complete this task. I only ask because something similar happened to me. I got a stack of work only I knew how to complete in any decent amount of time. I finished early said, ta dah, I done good boos, and boss said, "thanks now GTFO, you finished all the work you can do here because you don't speak Spanish as your native language." Granted the boss was a total uhm, word that rhymes with grunt, and was later fired for being a, uhm, word that rhymes with stunt, a little later. The actual boss asked if I wanted to come back and I declined.

look like you are accomplishing a lot in short periods of time, but nothing super human. This will make it look like you are working hard and give time to make changes so you aren't stuck on a drafting board on turkey day.

So I go with option 2, or burn down the building after hours. Maybe both.

Hey boss man, If I busted my butt and got this work done early, what type of bonus/raise would I be looking at.
Note: If answer to said conversation is $0, option 2.

I would go with option 4. Space it out in time to finish the Friday afternoon before TG. If you finish too soon, the deadlines will become harder to reach. By finishing early, you prove your worth, but not to a point they think you were scapegoating prior.

You may run into a snag in the form of a change in scope, or some other unforeseen event.
You will always enjoy the feeling of getting things done is less time than expected, and if you get that reputation, you are valuable.
The way most of our companies are run, I won't promise better raises; but also in our business, you will survive layoffs.
