is in his 28th straight hour of walking/jogging/running without sitting down longer than 5 minutes if that on the mountainous trails at the Hellbender100 Miler that encompasses the Mt Mitchell National Park and the Black Mountains above Asheville NC.

He and many scores of runners took off from the starting line Friday morn at 4:30am (while most of us were sleeping) and later on Friday afternoon he crossed the eye-pooping view from the Mt Mitchell summit which is the highest altitude east of the Rockies and where chilly temps even in Sept can cause snow to form..

and which is only about 1/4th of the total remaining miles to run since the trails wind downward, outward and back around the mid base of the mountain.

Last year my Son WiLL ran this race while slightly ill with a chest/head cold and then later with stomach cramps due to an incorrect water/electrolyte mixture and barely finished in the allotted time of 40 hours, finishing heroically on sheer guts & determination while vomiting last miles at 39hrs & 45min..

which to his surprise & joy garnered him virtually the exact same prizes as the winner..a custom-made wooden plaque with the metal Hellbender logo, cap, clothing and metal belt buckle!

Oh, look up what a Hellbender is. Shocked me!

Go SON & Go TiGER(s)!

Also called a snot otter.

Second largest salamander. Likes to hide under rocks in creaks and streams in mountain areas (including Blue Ridge and WV areas.

I was at The Wilds, an animal reserve center associated with the Columbus Zoo yesterday. They are working with a project to increase the hellbender population and dna quality.

Still looking for an update on Will. Been a few hours.

away which can take 5-7 more hours due to wear, tear, physical pain, temp ranging from 56* to 29* at those altitude of competition, etc.

A test of human endurance especially at age 54 and going against mostly very fit & trained 18-45 year old competitors from all over the world.

Yeah, I am amazed.

At age 34 I ran a marathon. Was pleased to get in under 4 hours. I've also done quite a bit of hiking on mountain trails (mostly in national parks out west). I have somewhat of a mild understanding of just how difficult what he is doing really is.

I saw the first five guys finished in just over 16 hours. They averaged just over 10 minutes a mile. If I didn't know that was humanly possible, you could never convince me it is.

What your son is doing in his mid fifties is absolutely amazing! The closest thing I have ever done was walk 100 holes of golf in one day, a distance of about 25 miles, to raise money for a HS football team. I was age 59. He's going 4 times as far, over much more difficult terrain, and he's going almost as fast as I did.

Wow!

I am just up the road in Boone this weekend celebrating my nieces graduation from App State. I grew up not too far from here and love this area. I still love clemson the most with this area a close second. Dreading packing up and heading home 3.5 hours towards the coast.

Good luck to the jr bulb running through the woods! Those days are long behind me. The only running I do anymore is to the dinner table! 😂

I ran that race last year. Was just about two miles from the finish when I slipped on a pile of vomit. Threw out my back and couldn't move. I laid...lay...layed there while other runners jumped over me. I haven't raced since then, before then, or possibly even then.

Did I mention he’s done the Grand Canyon steep descent to the river & across for the renowned “Rim to Rim to Rim” run twice in past several years and this N.C. mountain range should be a whiz but maybe he’s sightseeing a bit since he’s in love with those hills. LOL~

But, looking at the satellite picture looks like he's got a couple of miles of gentle descent ahead of him right now.

I've been to the Grand Canyon. Didn't even hike to the bottom. Did jog down to the plateau and back one morning. I had a student of mine do the rim to rim to rim. Just under 24 hours.

Let's see if I'm right and his pace picks up the next few miles.

On the other hand, I don't know what the rest of the course looks like. I'm just going by the satellite view on the tracking page.

It says, "Poor location fix."

Backl a couple of miles ago when his fix was good he was ahead of #162. (Passed him before the last check point.) Now it says he's behind 162.

Hoping when they get a good gps fix he'll be back ahead.

About 14+ minutes faster than ‘23 and especially good since he was in a 62 miler 2 weeks ago in Auburn California and with all the flying, getting hotel, renting car, driving to location, meetings and repeating that..and only decided to run this race 6 days ago and even had to get several buddies to go with him to help with supply car, pace him & etc.

Congrats SON!
