because people who will freely tell you the job a cashier does isn't worth anything have been pitching a fit about self-check out.*
I don't go that Wal-Mart buy the gym I go to is beside it.

They should offer both and you should get a discount if you use those lanes.

at the Clemson Bi-Lo #### 20 years ago. In my dream world the actual cashiers would be so plentiful that only folks skilled, and with a few items, would use the self-check out. I don't really even need the discount at that point because the time saved would be worth it, again in a perfect world.
If the stealing continues to be this huge problem we are told it is, then I see us being forced back in to a pre Piggly Wiggly system where customers don't touch stuff until the paying is done. It will be like service Merchandise, but worse some how.

Self-checkout lanes are for expediency, and I don't think we should be subsidizing demand with discounts. Because they're going to have the slowass, penny pinching couponers trying to ring themselves up and it's going to kill all the benefit.
On another note, I can't wait for the new Publix around here to be built because Harris Teeter has decided dedicated baggers are not worth the cost, and making those poor cashiers pull double duty is the the slowest, most asinine business decision in human history. I'll bag my own groceries if I have a good bit just to save time. One cashier appreciated it so much she gave me a senior's discount.

I greatly prefer self check over a cashier

for the simple reason that I do it faster and get out of the store quicker.
The exception is if I have so much stuff (like a full cart) that I don't have enough room to work with, then I'll go through a proper line.

If they're going to ask us to do the job that they were previously paying someone to do, why should I pay the same price as I did before?
You going to go to an automatic car wash that charges you full price and then tosses you a sponge and a bucket and lets you drive through the final rinse stage only?

per item of the average cashier for that store, they can get a discount. However, if they fail and take longer than average, there is a per minute surcharge.

More than that? Forget it. The cashier doesn't have to deal with the machine think they're shoplifting every 5th item and ask the attendant to hit the continue button.

It's all about getting me out of there as fast as possible, and if scanning/bagging my own loot gets me out the door faster, I don't care if this is something they should be paying to do. And, for a basket of groceries, self-checkout is the fastest and I don't need to get slowed up by goobers with a full cart trying to save $0.15.

That the slowpokes aren’t already clogging the self checkout lanes. They are. How could they not be when you’re lucky if they have one lane open with a cashier? It’s not like they’re currently enjoying the amazing service in the 5 open lanes and they’d gladly migrate over to self checkout for 5% off.

the self check is WIDE OPEN. Walk up, do biz, leave. The one thing I do hate most about it not being able to get cash back, but whatevs.
The other scenario I've seen (looking at you, Walmart and Harris Teeter) is they don't have enough cashiers, and EVERYTHING is jammed up. Cashier lines are 4 deep. Self check is like 10 deep (but being funneled to like 8 self checks). In this case, which is rare for me) I have to make a decision and normally choose self check.
I do think the self check culls a lot of the people that become speed bumbs. Incompetent cashiers, old people that don't know how to use a debit card, a MF WRITING A CHECK, people needing their order broken up for whatevergoddamn reason into 3 transactions, or weirdos that just want to chat up everyone around them.
Self check is faster 99% of the time.

Wal-Mart once a month. Wal Mart is what it is. They’re sending everyone to self check and it’s terrible.
Publix still GAF so usually there’s a pretty empty cashier line. Kroger, unless you go during off hours, is like your HT scenario. A line at both self checks at either end of the store, and maybe one or two cashiers, both 3-4 deep.
They’re saving money, making the shopping experience worse, and we’re paying them the same or more with a dumbassed grin on our faces.

Publix is eating HT's lunch...in their backyard.

Primarily because HT acts like they've thrown in the towel. The no baggers were a last straw for me because it is stuck a stupid move that can't possibly save any money because of how much slower it takes to process each customer.
Plus Publix has the little shopping carts for kids.
On another note, I'm growing more fond of Aldi's. There's one on the way to daycare that's a life-saver to grab some last minute items for dinner, and it is breathtakingly cheaper than the big chains. I don't think I could do big trips there...but I get the appeal.

member to unlock/access certain items AND scan them out for you (even when using the self checkout). Apparently the thievery is awful. The item under lock and key was a $3 can of shaving cream.
I'm about to buy a Costco membership.

a $3 can of shaving cream, I have to 1) find a customer service rep to unlock a cabinet; 2) let him/her take the item off the shelf; 3) go alert him/her when I'm ready to (self) check out; and 4) have him her scan it. All so I don't steal a $3 item.
This place has always been a terrible shopping experience (It's Walmart, duh) but this is just too much hassle. I only shop there because it's close by and way cheaper than Publix.
It seems Walmart's train of thought was: 1) eliminate cashiers to save $$$; 2) realize self checkout + their clientele leads to $$$$ in theft; 3) use customer service as customer babysitters.

Been to Target twice with my wife. That will remain the same until either of us is toes up.
After the second "short visit," I told her to go as often as she wants, but I'm done.
It took months for my T level to recover.

Most of my 'Walmart' type stuff comes from Amazon. I do occasionally go to the garden center, but they have their own checkout.

And yes, they will also shop for whatever items in the store for you as well (I guess, i've gotten some Dr Scholl's and other random stuff there while they got my groceries).
I park, and they bring my stuff to me, leaving me to bask in my LDR parking spot and enjoy listening to a podcast instead of the sounds of chaos and complaining.
