Hopefully a balanced offense (new QB and OC) will help out the D. Our DC said he wanted to see “fire” … sometimes they play as they’re coached; fire it up if you want to see fire.

no one thought they could not score last year no one felt the defensive could sack them, stop the run, and intercept a pass down the middle or sides

They seem to have taken on the identity of their defensive coordinator.

Many DBs were confused by Goodwin's terminology last year. The wrong assumption was that "cover 0" was the same as "no coverage".
As to what this article says...

Lack of talk about XT being a leader

I know he is on the injured list, but this has to be this guy's year if he want to make a major impact in college ball. Be flashed as a freshman, but has had nagging illnesses like Covid, Mono, then combine with toe's and ankles.
This has to be the season he blows it out if he wants to represent that #1 ranking he had as a recruit. Hald his playing time his freshman yr showed his talent but he has flashed little since then.
I think he may have been plagued with not being 100% committed or using tweaks as excuses. But of he wants to be a guaranteed millionaire, this is his chance to show out!
I wish I had the body size, speed, talent, etc, where I could bust my tail for the next 10mos, really got a couple months of light work, but in the next 10mos , he could make himself a multi-millionaire. I wish I was there right now as I would take full advantage of my situation. I hope he takes everything he has in front of him to be what he has shown he could be and he will be wealthy as a 20+yr old.
Go get them XT!

Amazing how we all know how we would act as 20 year olds. That's why we all got Straight A's in school by applying ourselves and studying enough, right?

If he stays healthy, he will be a beast this season, especially with teams trying to keep up, they’ll have to pass!

No improvement and her need to ride with Streeter… and if the WR don’t improve Grisham too

WR won’t improve until we recruit more Tee Higgins and Justin Rosses of the world. From 2011- 2019 we had that level of WR talent. 2020 saw the start of the fall off at WR. We were no longer elite just good and now we are average at best. We have to hope that Ronan H. and Noble Johnson are better than advertised.

Dabo? Elliot? Grisham? Why has our WR recruiting fallen off?

We have lived on a defense that could get a stop when it was needed and give the ball back to Deshaun, Trevor and they would do the rest. The narrative the last couple of years was all about what our offense could and could not do but the defense has to take responsibility for getting enough stops. A team is offense, defense and kicking sharing the load.

biggest thing i saw was open field tackling

and open running lanes. Some of that can be attributed to the offense not sustaining drives but alot also was just poor job wrapping up and bad angles. Could be talent not being there but seemed to be a lax approach. Venables always had our guys coached up on those fundamentals.

Agree with most on here. Very soft at times. Other than KJ I thought our line definitely didn’t live up to the preseason hype we were fed.

"Even if Goodwin calls the wrong coverage, we have to do our best."
Sorta reads like Shipley talking about Streeter's playcalling in the USuCk game.

Because DJ pushed 3 and out better than any QB we’ve had in a long long time.
Our defense played prevent because our secondary was weak & our offense couldn’t sustain drives a lot of the last two years.
Of course I’m thankful our down years where 11-3. This team was very talented last season & we underachieved. Injuries killed us in ‘21 with some great talent too.
Our defense is why we weren’t 7-6 the last two years. The offensive line recruiting & talent will show this season, we are much improved talent wise now.

Defense starts with a front four that can stop the run and

and pressure the QB. We did a pretty good job of stopping the run, but part of that was because throwing the ball against us was much easier.
Too often, it seemed that opposing QBs were comfortable in the pocket with time to wait for a receiver to get open. We never consistently got pressure on the QB.

I agree. The defense did not pressure the QB well last year. So what happened. We had a bunch of studs along the line. How did they not get to the QB? I have to believe it was coaching and play calling.
Last year was the first time I can remember not believing the D could make the stop we needed.

Offense that struggled to make 1st downs. D was on the field way too much, especially at ND.

the DB's to play press coverage and getting burned on several occasions it was nearly impossible to blitz and put pressure consistently on the opposing offense. Hopefully this will be a different story this year.
