Maybe true. The Russkies have apparently been confirmed to have killed at least five Abrams tanks that we know about. Word is they're having some joy using drones...which, as you mentioned, they were never designed to defend against.

And...so? We sent them remanded seconds knowing the Russians would destroy and likely capture some of it. Which happens in wartime.

24% of the children in New Mexico and Mississppi (and many other states are close to those percentages) don't know where their next meal is coming from but we can give $60 Billion more to suppprt a war in Ukraine? The U.S. has given more aid and weapons to Ukraine than the EU and rest of the world combined and it needs to stop. All that comes of it is that the government prints more phoney money to purchase more weapons and say look at the boost to the economy. The sad part is the debt meter keeps on spinning out of control.

I know all the so called stories about strategic need, weaken Russia, show China who's boss, keep the wheat shipping and all that crap but most of it is debatable. Not much has changed as far as "us verse them" since Korea. There are still communist nations that want to get us like the boogeyman. Keep a strong military at home and someone in charge that has enough brain to remember the code and we'll be fine.

I hate a bully as much as anyone but when we destroy ourselves financially, who will be the "next man up" to protect the world?

Or you're beating around the bush a bit. With this line:

24% of the children in New Mexico and Mississppi (and many other states are close to those percentages) don't know where their next meal is coming from but we can give $60 Billion more to suppprt a war in Ukraine?

Does this mean you favor taking that $60 billion and putting it toward feeding American kids? Would you support putting it toward education services for them? Welfare for their families? What do you want to spend it on?

Because I've found those who oppose supporting Ukraine tend to not actually support helping Americans back here with funding. Correct me if I'm misreading that about you.

If you liberals didn't hate so much, you might get to know the good side. I can only speak for me and those conservatives close to me, we have no problem with programs that help those with needs but there is a limit without accoutability. My guess is that number is pretty high among all conservatives. We need "us" to quit trying to be what the rest of the world wants us to be, "a piggy bank".

We had programs in place to feed the children 2 meals a day but took the funding away. $60 billion could really help. The child care act has gone up and up to give families tax breaks to keep them at a max of 7% of their income for child care. $60 billion could help with the budget. I don't even mind helping the homeless and addicts as long as they are held accountable to go to work and pay taxes in X amount of time. $60 Billion could help here.

Isn't that novel? Get people back on their feet so they can contribute in the work place and then help others in need by paying taxes to support the programs. There's "nothing for nothing" in this world and this can't be done throwing money away.

We need to clean up our own house and take care of our own first which includes balancing the budget.

And if you really believe the whole world is going to be one and equal, go get on the short bus and put on a helmet because you need to protect what naive brain you have left.

Yeah, I'm not a liberal. I don't want us to be the "piggy bank" either. I make an exception with Ukraine for these reasons:

1. They were invaded for attempting to become our ally.
2. If they fall without assistance, Putin gets what he wants and knows he can get away with it with other former Soviet states. He gets more of a foothold on Europe and we see the resurgence of the oppressive Soviet Union.
3. They are brutalizing the Ukrainian people. Rape, murder, torture. Mass killings of civilians. We have to push back.

I know why y'all "conservatives" (not real conservatives) oppose it: You falsely attribute some weird Biden/Ukrainian political corruption connection. This is folly. I'm not going to accuse you of Putin love, but there are others here I will like Charleston Tom or Keowee.

If you ever supported America's push back against communism, you will support Ukraine. Helping them is the conservative stance. And if you support helping Israel, you should be supporting Ukraine, too.

Now, on to what you said. Sure, I agree, that $60 billion could be used here at home. I'm skeptical you actually think it should be used for that; if you hate spending, I would imagine you also opposed our bloated budget for social programs, which I also agree needs some serious trimming (see, conservative).

And if you really believe the whole world is going to be one and equal, go get on the short bus and put on helmet because you need to protect what brain you have left.

I don't think this and have never stated anything to lead you to believe I do. Making such sweeping statements doesn't really help your arguments.

Frankly, nothing you've posted in this argument indicates you're a conservative.

Dude, that is the very definition of a strawman argument - put (ridiculous) words in somebody's mouth they didn't actually say, and then whump the stuffing out of that ridiculous statement that they didn't actually say...all the while, never addressing the thrust of the actual argument.

It's not a good way to argue - it's cheap Fox News populism, actually - and it makes serious people roll their eyes at you.

It also has the effect of meaning you never once actually considered whether or not the guy you're losing the argument to might actually be right. Which means if you were being a fool - and we all do that at times because we just plain didn't know better - you will remain a fool.

Just sayin'.

To be clear and not wanting to be accused of being mean, are you saying to be conservative you have spend money to be a warmonger and a person that wants to use the same money to help other Americans can't be conservative?

FYI, since the founding Fathers, there has been a conservative anti-war faction because they knew war and supporting war only causes debt and taxes.

But wanting to increase spending for social programs is traditionally an anti-conservative policy, and wanting to cut support to nations that are being invaded by dictatorships, particularly those linked to communism, has also gone against traditional conservative policy.

^^^^ this.

Lefties keep on posing false choice questions, such as in this string:

‘Would you rather spend the $60B on mikitary aid or social programs?’

As a non-leftist, you answered ‘neither.’ The answer: Don’t waste the money on either. Don’t spend it at all. Start cutting back on deficit spending.

The concept that you pose (just don’t spend the money) is incomprehensible to leftists. Thus, the leftists who proclaim to not be leftists reveal themselves to be … leftists.

Because a Trumpist who cries about spending doesn't really mean it. He still wants wasteful military spending. He still wants to support Trump policies that increase spending. So when they whine about spending, you have to quiz them on what you know they support to show their hypocrisy.

You want to spend, RTD. You're a liar when you say you don't want more spending in certain areas. And you've never been a real conservative.

The turbine engine model of Abrams tank has one huge issue

1

Apr 30, 2024, 11:38 AM
Reply

It has an ~ 8 hour operable time limit before it needs refueling. Whether idling or running constantly, the turbine Abrams can be deployed in battle for 8 hours max before needing to be refueled.

The Abrams turbine engine version is fast as the dickens, but consumes fuel just as quickly when at rest (in the idle mode) as when it is roaring through the steppe or the desert.

This means that a fuel truck had better be close to the turbine engine Abrams, or the tank crew better be lucky and either win the battle or retreat fast enough and far enough to get refueled before the enemy destroys it.

Note: Fuel trucks are easy targets in a land battle.

The diesel model of the Abrams tank doesn’t have this problem, but it doesn’t go as fast as the turbine engine version.

(*). Not surprised in the least that Abrams tanks are sitting ducks.

America’s Ukraine flag waving patriots, of course, don’t care, since Ukrainians are being killed. Our defense contractors are big happy. THAT is what really matters.

Pay attention.

The Abrams turbine engine tank uss fuel at the same rate whether the tank is just sitting there as when it is running flat out.

8 hours of operability between refueling. Parked and idling, or racing along … 8 hours.

(*). It is not good for a tank to have to run flat out the moment it gets started. That isn’t how battle is conducted.

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention this other gem about the turbine powered Abrams tank; the engine is VERY HOT, and thus has an extremely prominent IR (infra red) profile. Care to guess why this matters? I’ll see if you can figure this one out.

With difficulty and quality problems, there have been attempts to reconfigure Abrams tanks with diesel engines. (FYI, diesel powered tanks were widely used in WW II, with the USSR’s famous T-34 tank being the most prominent example.). This is difficult because the diesel engine that has the power to propel the Abrams structure forward is big, and doesn’t just ‘drop in.’ That is why most Abrams tanks are still the turbine engine type.

So … America is gifting Abrams tanks (in essence, obsolete weapon if it is a turbine engine model) to Ukraine to ‘save itself’ from Russia. I call B.S. on that. Instead, we are speciously stating a live for ‘democracy’ while actually using the Ukraine war as a reason to replenish our military with new weapons.

Look, if the debate is whether or not to update America’s military equipment, then let’s have that debate. Be honest about it.

But since the debate is that America must send marginally useful weapons to Ukraine in false hope that Ukraine will actually win back their lost territory, then that debate (as promulgated by our politicians and their propagandists in the MSM) is utterly dishonest and fundamentally immoral. Unless encouraging Zelenskyy The Grifter to keep sacrificing Ukrainian lives in a war of perpetual stalemate (or worse) is not immoral to America’s Ukraine flag wavers.
