The Syracuse game may have been the best thing for DJ

I agree that having an off game like a pitcher in baseball or a basketball player being a bit off is not really what was going on with DJ. There almost has to be something else. Last year it may have been injuries plus a loss of composure and focus (panic). He has looked so much better this year. Frankly, I have been surprised at how he had virtually eliminated last year's problems until the Syracuse game. DJ was a bit off in the game Saturday but that was not all of it and it wasn't all of it last year. Most of us didn't realize how much was on him last year. We know now that we didn't have other options at QB and it was pretty much all on DJ. Clemson football is very high visibility and extraordinary pressure. I honestly don't understand how these young men handle the pressure.
Dabo has been working on building his confidence and it has been working. Saturday DJ was having an off game, but the collapse came when he lost his focus on the current play and became too aware of everything that he didn't need to have on his mind. He needs to think about how to best execute each play and not that it is critically important that every play be successful. This year we have depth at quarterback. When Dabo saw DJ going into that 2021 season head place, he pulled him. DJ saw his teammate come in, focus and pull out a win. DJ saw that it is not all on him. He saw that victory can be "snatched from the jaws of defeat". That can happen by letting someone else take a shot or by settling back down and pulling out a win himself.
I don't know how good Dabo is at X's and O's (because I don’t know that stuff myself) but he is a great manager and he truly does want to help his players be better people as well as better players. I am hoping last Saturday's game turns out to be a turning point for DJ. I believe it may well prove to be.

A lot of us hope it is the turning point for great things for DJ no one wants any of our guys to fail. This is a important week for DJ to learn and get his head right.

Nice post. Good analogy. I'm hoping this will help Streeter too. I'd much rather see DJ "fake" a QB draw and then dump a little jump pass (or a toss sweep) out to the flat to Ship or Mafah... Unless he sees a hole wide enough for a truck.

Do you think that during that play, DJ was supposed to…

…drop back and dump a pass over the middle?
IF that was the case, then, would DJ have ALSO had the option to give the ball to Mafah?
Or, would Mafah have known that there was 0% chance of getting the ball handed to him, i.e., if DJ had handed the ball to Mafah, there would have been as good of a chance at Mafah fumbling the ball?

I agree that DJ should benefit from knowing we have help

elsewhere if he struggles. It's like removing a weight of sorts. I expect him to play a little more relaxed with a little more room for joy out on the field, as it should be.
The double benefit here is that Cade got a definite confidence boost from that effort Saturday should he be needed in relief again. In the long run that performance was a win for both of them.

Sorry, but I don’t think it was good for him at all.

I hope you’re right, and he shrugs it off, but I think it hurt his confidence (which was improving each week) and he might be looking over his shoulder again if things don’t go we’ll wondering if Cade is coming in to replace him.

I agree with you. But to add to what your said, I think DJ wouldn’t mind handing the reigns over. He’s played better this year besides Saturday, but I wonder how much he enjoys all that comes with being the QB at Clemson.

It wasn't just DJ having a off start. The team was meh in a way - sure we moved the ball but we did not execute and that requires mental sharpness. Our guys were tired really. And for whatever reason, Dino often has a good plan against Dabo.
I think the 8 - straight games coming off of a 3 of 4 game road trip against generally good teams was showing. Cuse had a mid-October bye before State and did not have to flex to much in that game without Leary. They had more spring to begin the game. We were just mentally exhausted and it showed.
But champions find a way. We needed a bye and we needed something to make us focus during the bye week.

DJ wasn’t terrible, but it was good to get CK in the game to competently lead the offense in a steady manner. For whatever reason if DJ has a lapse again CK will come in without a second thought. That hurdle has been jumped.
