The recruitment of DJU

Nov 8, 2022, 11:24 AM

Our staff had to know what they were getting when they recruited DJ. He was a pro-style, in the pocket QB that only took off running when it was absolutely necessary. Not exactly our mold of a dual threat QB dating back to when we went to a hurry-up, spread offense under Chad in '11.

It makes you wonder why the coaches never tried to tailor the offense to DJ's strengths. Even in the COVID year before his 2 starts, they had some packages for DJ that had him doing QB draws. He's a big guy that can push a pile or 2 but it's not exactly his thing. Similar to how the RPO does not highlight his strengths, to say the least.

I typically dislike comparing to other programs but the offense will typically change based on who the QB is at Bama. There were designed runs/read option for Hurts/Sims but hardly any for Coker/Mac Jones. The same is true for schools like Texas, Georgia and Ohio State. Even if you go back a few years with FSU, EJ Manuel ran a much different offense than Jameis did.

Granted, DJ does have confidence issues at times but I think it's partly due to him being uncomfortable with the offense. It just does not seem like our staff has taken the time to find out what DJ does best and instead they have tried to make a square peg fit into a round hole. I've seen the same guy put on a clinic in Winston Salem and make NFL-like throws vs NC State/FSU.

DJ surely deserves some blame (holding onto the ball too long, ball security, etc). But great (and I mean great) playcallers find ways to mask the deficiencies of their QB. I.e., put them in the best position to succeed for the long-term.

Oh well, just my 2 cents. I am bored at work...

It's far too early...

to know if Streeter can or will become a great play caller. Tony Elliott...not so much IMO. In fairness, I do think some of the play calling is because of execution concerns by the staff at various positions.

Sometimes good things fall apart so better things can fall together.

I don't buy the DJ is a pro style QB and we aren't using him

properly or masking his weaknesses suggestions. I think our coaches have done a great job of getting the most out of him given his obvious struggles with confidence, decision making, pre snap reads, post snap reads, setting up throws with his eyes, progressing through his reads, accuracy, ball placement, mechanics, footwork etc.

DJ would be the same in a pro style offense, but would lose the ability to contribute with his feet. He didn't run until late in the third quarter of the ND game. The QB position is too difficult of a job for his struggles. There is no offense that could mask his weaknesses in every game.

Tajh Boyd averaged about 150 attempts and about 450 yards per season. DJ is right at that with 373 yards on 98 carries though 8 games. Trevor only had about 100 rushing attempts in his only full season but had 600 yards rushing(2018 - replaced Kelly, 2020 - Covid). Deshaun was our only scrambling QB in the pocket rushing for over 1000 yards on 200+ carries.
