Believed it was a bad decision. The ACC was already sinking and this was a way to trap the existing programs from leaving. Very short-sighted.

It was a bad deal, but he was not the only cook in the kitchen at Clemson. The ACC and member institutions wanted a network channel badly and ESPN took advantage of that. A big reason we had no bargaining power at the time was the dud teams in the league that can't move the needle in football viewership. Barker did a lot of great things and served with character and class outside of this deal.
Btw, great leaders and CEOs have to be prescient and anticipate future contingencies. That is what the great ones do with some regularity.

Barker is one of the classiest men in the business. A Clemson man that is missed IMO.

In 2013 that ran through 2027. Might be 3 years more than it needed to be, but there were no major issues with that deal.

Clements signed the 2016 one that extended it until 2036. That is the one that has been the disaster.

Might want to get your facts straight before bashing Barker. Barker was an incredible president for Clemson. His worst mistake was probably hiring TDP - which was great for football, but not other Clemson sports.

I am not certain that Jim Barker was Pres. of CU when the Swofford deal and GOR pact was signed by ACC member school leaders. It likely was Dr. Clements signing on for Clemson. Either way---both were much too cordial to John Swofford and his activities as ACC Commissioner.
Swofford never seemed to treat Clemson fair in my opinion.
