Question - If they want to come back out of the portal

Jan 8, 2023, 12:01 PM

with the school/team they were with when they entered the portal, is it up to the school/team whether or not they let them come back?

You're right though, a lot of players have a set destination through tampering or whatever, but a lot of other players haven't thought about it enough.

I don’t know, but I strongly suspect that when a player rejects his current school in order to go elsewhere, there is no longer any moral obligation for the original school to honor that player’s scholarship beyond the end of the academic year.

Also, to my understanding, the scholarship for all athletes is a one year deal whose renewal is expected … but not a legal mandate.

When ‘entering’ the portal, the athlete in question expresses IN WRITING his/her interest in going to another school.

The coach of the ‘old’ school may then choose whether or not to re-new the offer to grant another year of scholarship privileges to the portal athlete who had second thoughts and wants to return to the ‘old’ school.

Again, this is only my understanding … others can undoubtedly provide something closer to a definitive answer.

Thanks Jay Bilas. Your advocacy has resulted in 1000 young men missing out on a college education.

For every college football player that is advantaged by the transfer portal there will be at least one if not more that will be disadvantaged. The ugly end result of the portal is that some young people will make poor decisions to transfer and that eventually some programs will not renew scholarships for marginal players _ simple look for replacement bodies via recruiting or the portal.

Running right around 40% then. Same as historically. At some point the coaches will get through to the more marginal (2nd team or co-starters) that fame and glory does not necessarily await at the opposite end of the portal.

I read a source that said 4084 Division 1 football players

entered the portal in the 2021 academic year. That number was reported in May, 2022. It looks like that there is already some education going on about the portal not being an utopia. I am still disappointed in the number of outward ones Clemson had this year, though.
