APM is eager to watch.
If you have not partaken, dew wreck or mend.
Lots for a Lungeite to love. Several depictions of seppuku, some kinky geisha #####, some bloody pre-firearms samuri fighting, and one harrowing torture scene in episode one.

Do not like the Caucasian lead who comes across like he's on the spectrum. Odd casting, distracts me, not sure why Mariko likes him. Maybe she's the kinda person who adopts a blind three-legged dog.
Also, Mariko is an interpreter, not a translator. She's also a little smoke bomb and I'd like to copulate with her.

He's "different" and the creators liked how "punk rock" he felt in the role

and that his audition was so different that while he didn't necessarily fit the traditional expectation of the role, his presence was more modern and most importantly, memorable. I can see that being divisive though, but I personally see why they liked him. He's certainly memorable considering his character is probably the least interesting character on the show. I will say, I hated the fake contacts they had him wear, which I found incredibly distracting.
As for Mariko, I think she mostly falls in love with him because he allows her to be herself. There's the whole episode named "the eightfold fence" about how she has to compartmentalize her feelings because she has a duty and role in a system that doesn't allow her to be an individual. Also, the book makes a point to express how hung he is so there's that...

Haven't watched the finale, but the series has been fantastic...

I knew nothing of the book or the original miniseries so I came into the show as fresh as possible. I've read that it follows pretty closely to the book (other than the fate of one of the characters) and if true, I can see why the book became so popular.
I do wish it had gone on more than one season, and think it had enough substance to have warranted it, but I guess that would have risked not getting a conclusion to the story if it was cancelled early.
My favorite scene: (minor spoiler) The scene in the tea room (brothel) where the courtesan repositions herself behind Mariko and talks "through" her to allow her to express her feelings is going to be the scene I remember most about the series. It's great writing, staging and directing while also just being a cool scene. It's one of the more cinematic scenes I remember seeing and why TV/streaming is so much better than movies right now.
