Had a good conversation about the common places we were in. He is from Walhalla and was wearing a Vietnam Veteran cap so I asked about his time there. Both of us spent time in a military hospital in Japan on the way home.

We'd all be speaking Vietnamese right now if it wasn't for guys like them. Probably be eating phở and those little bánh mì sandwiches, too. Some people didn't want to go to war, but we didn't really have a choice after they attacked Pearl Harbor.

There is no call for that comment.

Actually there was a call for it.***

No there wasn't. I don't agree with U.S. involvement in Vietnam, but I praise our brave men who answered the call to serve. You can support the soldier even though you disagree with the politics of the war.

Sure there was. See clovers post below.

As for supporting the vets, what did you do to “support” other than type a few words on a message board?

I have family that are Combat veterans. Help them out in ways that would not be necessary had they not gone to war.

We can all use a little humor. We all know the Vietnamese were not the threat at that time.... if there was one at all. Who knows when politicians are the ones who make the decisions.

I had a similar experience meeting a fellow Marine in Costco who spent time in the same Naval hospital in Guam that I did. We must have talked for 25 minutes. It only takes a few seconds to find out if they are the real deal. All are not!

You would not believe how many "Navy Seals", "Army Rangers", or "Marine Recon/Snipers" that I have talked to that did not know the name of the unit or place they served at in Viet Nam.

My brother has a photo on his phone of a dude in the airport with a Marine Corps uniform on with three or four rows of ribbons and PFC (Private First Class) chevrons on his sleeve. Ain't no way! If he had been in long enough to earn those ribbons, he would have been at least a Staff Sergeant ..... and if he had been busted enough times to be demoted to PFC, he would have already been drummed out of the Corps.

I had a great year in Pleiku during 68=69. Saved several times by the grace of God. All my buddies are now gone.

the Air Force when I finally got my first job in industry. I had already taken their preplacement tests, yada yada, but had yet to sign on the dotted line.

Is there a registry for Viet Nam Vets, so we can know how many are still around? You all are hitting the threshold ages now where the Grim Reaper starts to collect those he missed over there.

unless the supposedly enemy is a real threat to our home-front.

Yes, I understand..we soldiers get all hyped up and go fight as we should but since WW2 it seems about every war was politically motivated and served the politicians & military defense industries more than ours.

I heard a theory once about Viet Nam, which made as much sense as any.

The story was, Russia / Chinese Vietnamese "sympathizers" did not believe the United States still had enough gumption, or lack of humanity, to ever drop another "A" bomb. So, to prove them wrong, we did the next most inhumane thing. We sent scores of our young men way over there to die in a senseless war, in which there would never be a definitive outcome, since NOBODY was going to drop a bomb over it. In so doing, we were to prove we were just immoral enough to do whatever it took, whereever it took, whenever it took. Sadly, we proved that point. We threw away our young mens lives for nothing.

It didn't turn out well for ANYONE, we gained NOTHING ultimately, and LOST the lives of over 58,000 of our finest young men. And the news media turned the public against those who willingly did serve, with their nightly serving up of "atrocities". The near, or actual criminal mistreatment of our veterans who survived that hellhole is, and should always be considered one of the most shameful episodes in our country's history.

Small world. I’m thinking it must be good for y’all to talk to others from time to time who have shared those experiences. Most of us can only imagine what y’all went through. I know I wouldn’t begin to know what to say other than thank you.

Sometimes I feel like the memories are just imagined - that I couldn't have been there and done all that we did.
