That was in the days of team first, me second. The chance to play with their teammates one more time trumped the odds of getting hurt. The real studs had Lloyds of London policies in case their career ended prior to being drafted. It was considered selfish to bail on your team, which used to be a bad thing. Of course, being a showboat was bad too.
Since CFP made the rest of the bowls meaningless, not to mention the amounts of money involved now, the business aspect starts in 8th grade. It’s no surprise that they now bail, it’s a business.
How long until a draft prospect quits mid season because their team at 7-2 is now out of the CFP. Why play for a conf championship? It’s all about your draft score and the money.
Not complaining, just generalizing of course. The NFL paid much less back then as well. And tickets were $12…

There were far fewer bowl games and those that did exist had some meaning. In the 1970s, there were only about eleven (11) bowl games. In the 1980s, that number grew to fifteen (15). The oldest of which included the Fiesta Bowl, the Peach Bowl, the Liberty Bowl, the Citrus Bowl, the Gator Bowl, the Cotton Bowl, the Sun Bowl, the Sugar Bowl, the Orange Bowl, and the Rose Bowl. Today, there are forty-three (43) bowl games, the newest of which is the Myrtle Beach Bowl (rolling eyes) meaning that eighty-six (86) of the one hundred and thirty-one (131) Division 1 schools will be participating in post-season play. Why? Because coaches like the extra practice time and, more importantly, the teams that do participate get paid. You have ESPN to thank for that considering the network owns the broadcasting rights to the vast majority of those games.

Playing in a bowl game was once a coveted reward for having a good season. Now, because there are so many effectively meaningless bowl games, it has become more and more common for players to transfer or to opt out of the games in order to "protect themselves" from injury before preparing for the NFL draft which has resulted in the bowl season losing A LOT of its luster.
