DE Depth

Jan 3, 2023, 10:25 AM

I love our incoming D-line prospects. DT will be stacked and I really like the film on TJ Parker. However, banking on true freshman to start or assist Mascoll and Williams (fingers crossed Thomas) and unproven Denhoff, Patterson and Lawson is a recipe for very little pass rush. This group will be worse than our WR group.

I have been a portal holdout but if we are going to compete with the top programs, we need to be prepared to weak areas as needed.

Here is one that would fit pretty well. Only has one year of eligibility left.

You are correct and at the rate we are going it will get worse.

I don't know, maybe we need to go all DT's as that is the strongest and deepest group on the team. Might see a lot of the 3-4 alignment next year but not sure where the extra LB will come from.

Maybe Lawson would be a LB. He is listed as 215 lbs at DE. That's not realistic. At this stage he's safety size with DE speed. Another project situation. I like our DT's but anyone we have will be a drop off from T Davis and Bresee. Guess Ruke is up in the air on his plans but we could certainly use him.

It's an area of huge concern we have no functional depth at all at DE. Mascoll has graded out very poorly agains the run, and is an "average" pass rusher.

Screw Calford.

There's going to be a big drop off. Logan Rudolph played an entire season at DE (6'2" and 245) and recorded one sack. I hope we don't get back into that situation again. Dehoff was rated as a top 100 player. He should factor into the equation and provide a boost.

Our pass rush from our front 4 was hardly noticed this year anyway. XT was probably our most explosive rusher, so we def need him back. KJ had his moments, Murphy was on and off...like he was playing not to get hurt, Bresee had his obvious issues. But, unless Goodwin decided to bring LBs or a safety on a blitz, we rarely got pressure a lot of times. Seemed like every 1st half was a basic 3 man rush with the QB having til halftime to make the throw. I think our players will still be fine regardless, but our scheme and in-game coaching could surely get better.

Let’s see how it plays out. XT to me makes a great weak side end OR 3-4 OLB but honestly we never run a 3-4 like people in the threat are implying we should do, when we go 3 down lineman it’s a 3-3-5. And often we aren’t even in 4-3 it’s 4-2-5.

And we may have some combo of freshman plus dehoff and Williams that can compete for the second team, the concern is strong side end to me to replace Murphy. We need that force there, maybe an athletic DT can take it? We will be very good at backer and potentially good at DB plus offense SHOUlD be dramatically improved so let’s just see how this plays out, it’s unrealistic to expect to improve at EVERY position each year but if we improve at 60 or 70% of them that’s a good thing.
