The idea is to add revenue not decrease - not that hard to

2

Aug 5, 2023, 11:34 AM

understand. Clemson’s revenue would have gone down by adding those teams- that’s without considering the additional travel costs involved. Do you seriously think adding those teams brought value? Believe the B10 lowered their revenue by adding the 2 they did or those teams agreed to amount on par with ACC to join and will be getting less. B12 continues to stay behind ACC in average for the future and adding more travel costs along the way. Also, adding members will decrease the chances of dissolution to the league and GOR. You would be adding NO votes when possibly the current situation we only would need 1 more YES if it’s decided that is the best route at some point

Re: The idea is to add revenue not decrease - not that hard to

Aug 5, 2023, 1:12 PM

Stanford would be a good school to add, but an awful location for the ACC.

Nothing about the PAC 12 or BIG 12 makes sense for the ACC at this point.
The PAC 12 is toast, with Washington State and Oregon State trying to join the BIG 10 or the BIG 12.

After passing on West Virginia, UCF, and Cincinnati; there’s not much left to add to the ACC.
Notre Dame is not likely full time, with the Big 10 out there.

We are stuck with the ACC unless the SEC comes calling, which will probably happen sometime.
The SEC could end up with WVA, Va Tech, UVA, UNC, FSU, Miami, possibly GA Tech, NC State, and of course Clemson.
Resulting in 3 Power conferences, SEC, BIG 10, and BIG 12.

This is an arms race. It’s about survival. That’s why expansion makes sense. And that’s why the ACC will die. They haven’t and evidently still don’t get the big picture.

Are we sure this isn’t just a smokescreen covering up something that actually makes sense? Like, for example, expansion invalidating the GOR and opening up the conference for teams that would be gone instantly without the penalties hanging over their head? And maybe the ACC doesn’t want to publicly point out the real reason, even though it’s probably well known by teams that have done their legal homework?

I don’t know, but that would make more sense than, uh, we’d rather die on the vine than expand, take a small hit, and still have a future.

Not buying it.

We are in a ridiculous financial agreement that will almost certainly end the ACC but if we had any chance to remain a power conference we needed more quality teams. Texas, Oklahoma, USC & Oregon would have been great additions. UCLA & Washington aren't bad either. At this point there's not much hope for the ACC and I hope we join the B10 over the SEC. GO TIGERS!!!!

I really don't think that's the way they are thinking about it. They are trying to find a way to make it more difficult for a few current members from getting out.
They are also trying to protect their phony baloney jobs.

As much as probably half or more of us Tiger fans would love to see us in a conference that wasn't so weak. For the ones that don't believe being in such a weak conference hurts us, I would bet everything that I have that it don't helps us in the eyes of the people that say evey time we win something of importance that any school with a heartbeat could get to where we've been playing from the ACC, and to me it's embarrassing just hearing things like being said about the school that "I have loved most of my life"!!!

One more that that I would like to add, playing our #1 sport FB, we would be a lot better off playing in a strong FB conference bc it would have us conditioned for when we do play in the playoffs or the National Championship game bc we would be more use to getting hit in the mouth, and we wouldn't be shocked by it when it happens bc we would have been hit in the mouth before we get to the tough games!!!

Why was the ACC considering a deal that COST current members? We are in a pretty serious situation right now of a growing gap with the Big 2 and we are on the cusp of deals that COST us only to be saved by the deal falling apart with targets choosing other options?

Get the hell out of this league. I'd have FSU on line 1 and be talking about strength in numbers to solve this mess.

Not that Phillips needs or should be defended, and I'm not trying to do that, but Phillips inherited a very screwed up conference that Shitface Swofford left behind after getting filthy rich with some of his sleazy, stupidest deals he made while setting in the head chair of the ACC. He could have made the ACC a little stronger in FB, but instead of doing that, he brought more basketball first schools into the ACC over making the conference stronger in FB, the biggest money maker in all of college sports while being blind by that truth!!

If we pretend Oregon and Washington were available and not going to the B1G, I think they would have added value. They're two very big brands AND--with some of the other Pac-12 teams--they would have given the ACC the Mountain/Pacific Time Zone. Prior to these last pieces moving to the Big XII, Colorado would have been the furthest West ESPN's college football contracts went. It would have made sense to keep some form of the Pac-12 together to have more games late at night, and it would open the door to give those under-the-radar West Coast teams regular East Coast exposure and marquee matchups.

When the article referred to "loss of value of $1-3 million/year" I was interpreting that as the remaining schools. They said it was known for month but I have to assume they weren't ever considering Oregon & Washington as part of the equation because they have been mentioned so often with the B1G (like FSU/Clemson with the SEC).

Syracuse fan living in Greenville. I think the ACC should let both Clemson and FSU move on now with conditions. The reality is no other schools outside of those two have plausible national championship goals in football on an annual basis or most likely never will. None of the other conference schools could compete with Bama, Ga, OSU or Michigan even if they were in the SEC or Big whatever. The remaining ACC schools should admit that and move towards as follows: Clemson and FSU pay the $120 million exit fee that results in a $20 million one time payment each of the 12 remaining schools. Clemson and FSU would each pay $300 million for getting out of the GOR over the next 13 years giving the remaining each school an additional $4 million per year. Most estimates have the GOR worth $500 million so. $300 million seems fair if both schools want to get in the SEC. Finally ESPN has to agree to keep the current contract in place as is for the 12 remaining schools. Clemson and FSU get what they want and the “new” ACC schools get boost in annual payments put o $37-38 million. The big question is will ESPN contract.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

ESPN would be happy to help FSU. Clemson, not so much.

ESPN would never keep the current payouts without FSU and Clemson in the conference. They bring in the viewers. You expect ESPN to continue paying for 13 years at the same rate without the marquee programs? That’s comical.

Re: TNET: Reports: ACC had meeting set on adding Pac-12 schools before 'Big' departures

Aug 5, 2023, 4:26 PM

How could that be, they signed into the very same contract as the ACC. If Clemson and FSU were all of a sudden crappy in FB, ESECPN would still have to pay the contract amount they and the ACC agreed to.

Re: TNET: Reports: ACC had meeting set on adding Pac-12 schools before 'Big' departures

It is well known there is a clause that allows ESPN to cancel or modify the contract at their discretion if teams leave the league. Unlike Swofford, they aren’t stupid.

Aug 5, 2023, 6:38 PM [ in reply to Re: TNET: Reports: ACC had meeting set on adding Pac-12 schools before 'Big' departures ]

Not really if ESPN does not want to be the network that brings down another conference. The remaining ACC schools still represent a strong conference and will have representation in the CFP each year. ESPN will not have a contract with the Big 10 going forward. They still need what would be the 3rd best conference. ESPN would retain the rights to broadcast ND away games with ND plays the ACC schools each year. It would not take much to make this happen. The real question is does the SEC want Clemson and/or FSU and at what price. Clemson is a great fit for the SEC but would CBS pay up so that adding them is not dilutive to the existing SEC members.

Aug 5, 2023, 1:04 PM

Adding schools could possibly let Clemson and Florida State out of the GOR. One of Florida states biggest complaints is that the ACC has been approached by ESPN but refuses to talk to ESPN because any change in current conference membership would open the door to let Clemson and Florida State out of the GOR.

Clemson will find a way out… But I said at the time on tiger net it was a huge mistake to agree to the GOR.

I am very confident Neff and Company will have us out relatively shortly

Re: Not sure I buy that…

Aug 5, 2023, 4:35 PM

That is something that is never mentioned, but I seriously don't understand DRAD and President Clements signing the GOR deal that they signed knowing it was locking Clemson into a 20 year deal without anyway out with the SEC and the Bg already getting paid more than the ACC before they signed that deal!!!

Re: TNET: Reports: ACC had meeting set on adding Pac-12 schools before 'Big' departures

Part of the GOR is if The ACC expand, teams are open to leave with just an exit fee. The TV rights are null and void. Wes Durham stated that on The ACC Network during the ACC Media Event. So if the ACC wants to add teams, let them. Clemson can then get out clean.

You snooze, you lose. Typical of the way this conference handles everything. No creativity and no sense of urgency. We really do need to find a new home. I think FSU may have the right idea when it comes to aggressively looking at their options. All the good options are going to be gone if we don't get on the stick.
