A peek at the future of the 12 team playoff

With the latest rankings, I believe the 12 team would look like:

1. UGA - Bye
2. Mich - Bye
3. Wash - Bye
4. FSU - bye

Tulane @ Oregon
Ole Miss @ Ohio State
Penn St @ Texas
Mizzou @ Bama

So,
4 SEC teams
3 B10 teams
2 PAC teams
1 ACC team
1 B12 team
1 Other team

With conference expansion, the ACC will only ever get 1 team in the 12. SEC & BIG will take the rest.

Can't believe the PAC, B12, and ACC leaders didn't see this one coming.

This is the weakest the SEC has been in years, so if they were to get 4 in this year, they may get 6 teams in other years.

Thats why when you see a Tennessee team propped up in rankings in week 9 to get a Alabama another top 20 win, it matters

that may be their downfall...

if you regularly have 6 plus SEC teams I don't know that the tv ratings will be there.
Some of the lowest national title games have been the all-SEC matchups (Bama/LSU being the all time lowest I believe).

The rest of the country won't be as interested in the SEC invitational tourney. I didn't think they should expand for just that reason but that horse is out of the barn so....

Exactly. Who would want to watch a postseason SEC rematch like Bama/ Mizzou when we have already seen a final end all game to determine the SEC champ a week or two before. I just don't know about this 12 team playoff.

Any teams getting in from the BIG beyond Michigan and Ohio State probably come

from the new western entries. Penn State will never win a truly meaningful game under James Franklin. Putting them in the Playoffs is just a wasted spot.

The reason the ACC doesn't currently have is because Louisville bombed against Kentucky. If they had won the game, they would be in there. Can't blame anyone else for that.

I do think it will be common place for the SEC and probably the B10 to get 3 or more teams in each year. I do agree with you though, that the ACC and others can have years where they get 2 or 3 in a well if teams perform that way. Clemson would have been in a 12 team playoff last year, and could have put itself in position this season had a few plays gone the other way.

Ignoring the conference thing entirely

the 12 team playoff is kind of terrible. I could probably get on board with 8, but 12 is just adding alot of bloat while devaluing some of the best regular season games.

Agreed. This year is probably the best argument we've ever seen in favor of 8 or more teams getting in, but in most years it's been a stretch just get to 4 in terms of deserving teams.

Looking at the ACC this year, its hard to point to another team who deserves a playoff berth. Had UL not crapped the bed last weekend they would have had a good shot.

Bama needed a Hail Mary miracle to beat a team that had just lost

I don't think Bama is all that great this season, at least not compared to what we're used to seeing from them, but I don't put a lot of stock into the Auburn game when factoring that in. I don't think anyone doubts that Auburn was spending the week of the New Mexico State game getting ready for Bama, and that the effort they put towards Bama was 100 times greater than the effort put forward the week before.

We only beat Troy by 6 points which included recovering an onside kick, needed NC State to miss a short FG to force overtime, and lost to Pitt in 2016 and we went on to win the NC that season. I'm certainly not saying Bama is on the level that we were that season, only that weird things happen sometimes.

They did see it coming and created the “alliance” to prevent it. That bought the B1G time to plot their next move. Then the B1G ignored the alliance and destroyed the Pac 12. After that, the SEC, B1G, and ND immediately put the 12 playoff back on the table, offered the carrot of conference championship, auto bids, and the ACC and big 12 caved like the second class conferences they are.
