Why do some people always think adding West Virginia would somehow save the ACC?

Almost every time there’s talk on here about ACC trying to survive by adding schools someone comes along and pitches West Virginia. Are these WV fans that are just just trolling on our boards? Or are people really that delusional that WV somehow offers anything to the conference in terms of football, revenue, or academics?

West Virginia has a better football product, stadium, and fan support than all but a handful of current ACC programs. Talk to UNC about "academics". That ship has long sailed.
The ACC's problem is all the dead weight watering schedules and revenue down. West Va would be a huge addition, especially were we to divvy up football programs from non in house.

Regardless adding them would not move the revenue needle

Adding no one on their own is going to move the revenue needle, including Notre Dame, not with so many programs tugging the value down. Unless we get creative with our scheduling and leverage our football brands better, we will continue to wallow on the edges.
West Va versus Clemson, Miami, V Tech, Pitt (Backyard Brawl), NC State, Louisville - those are games people will tune into watch no matter where they are played. Duke, Wake, BC, Syracuse, UVA versus any and all of the above - all snorefests. That's our revenue problem.

Respectively disagree. Yes, it would be great matchups for a small number of people, it would (as suggested by jstone) do nothing to move the national viewership. Sadly, we're backed into a corner. We can't get rid of teams. We could add 2 more teams to become 16 but all the networks will do is laugh. Why would they pony up money. Swoffie wanted the northeast to tune in for basketball. They could careless about college sports. How we fell for it, is beyond me.
I agree with you, doing nothing isn't the answer either.

It's not that we need to get rid of teams so much, as many are great opponents in many other sports, we just need to split many out into a separate division for football scheduling so we have a better product week in and week out to compete in and offer a media partner. West Va would, IMO, be a great addition to a football-focused division. They are way out of place in the Big XII and the ACC could help them improve in many areas. We would have to add a few extra programs to help flesh out the lower division scheduling. That list of snorefests above, add Ga Tech into there and that's six existing teams that could form the basis of a second division. There aren't many options out there to fit on top besides WVa and Cincinnati (ND is a never), but there are options to fill in on the back end to round out scheduling and build a stronger geographic hold. Revenue would be focused up top for the great scheduling and weekly TV product, with perhaps affiliate style payments for the lower division newbies, over where they are but not quite ready for primetime.
We have 8 programs right now, in league, that could band together and make this happen on their own by either disbanding and rebuilding or stating that it will be disbanded unless. That's comforting.

Notre Dame's ton / 15 = Not nearly enough.
Also, we already have 5 games with them each season, so adding only 3 more isn't exactly jet fuel.

WVU is not a TNet fav. I’d view WVU along with Rutgers, Maryland, Kansas, etc. UNLESS we’re talking basketball. FOOTBALL, not so much. Now, Cinti, Memphis, UCF….maybe a different conversation.

Big picture is this: WE add West Virginia, Cincinnati, and Notre Dame. We lower conference games to 8 and have permanent alternating rivalry games with two teams. We let Notre Dame use a non conference game as a rivalry game so they only play 7 conference games. We develop a point system to determine the top two teams each year, counting and weighing conference games and top 20 wins more than other games. We let each team choose ACC team for non conference games if they desire. This is the best deal Notre Dame will get and still be in a conference. Allow Notre Dame and other ACC teams to schedule good teams out of conference. For the NCAA championship, ACC winner will almost always be part of it. Being part of a big conference may get someone left out that did not win their conference. ACC will have 17 teams with better than average fan travel and support distance wise {and have good weather) than the BIG10. Nuff said.

Exactly. Not gonna happen as soon as ND looses it's option of being an INDEPENDENT .They bill bolt into the BIG. The ACC will be done. Clemson will be in the SEC.Its gonna happen.

Depends on Florida Sate, Miami, Virginia Tech, and North Carolina. If they become powers again but more likely they don't and we bolt (if they are stuck in mediocracy). We need good teams not just Clemson. We are in the cat bird seat so decision is not needed until 2025. WE are the best team out there - better than Notre Dame.

WV brings nothing to the table, unless you enjoy having batteries and other projectiles thrown at you at football games.

We are looking for good teams, who's left that is close? I don't think adding Baylor or TCU would work but maybe that's where we go.

Not sure I’m not one that has ever or would suggest adding WVU would be a great idea.

The same can be said for UCF which is mentioned quite a bit. Doubt many outside Florida know what the letters UCF mean much less what they have for a mascot. Can't see they have enough of a brand to attract a meaningful level of viewers in games against non-elite teams to make a significant impact to the ACC's attraction.

The failure to ask WVU to join the ACC when offers

went to VT and Pitt, was an act of elitism, snobbery, if you will, that I couldn't believe Clemson tolerated. It was disgraceful, and I am sure of its origins right up there in the Greensboro area.
That those folks have to travel great distances for in-conference away games is sickening, and before anyone casts aspersions toward their programs, I might remind them of one of the worst losses we have endured on a gridiron down in Miami in a bowl game, courtesy of the Mountaineers.
Clemson and South Carolina for years were treated like red-headed step children in the ACC, and for us to adopt any superiority complex over another school is dead wrong out the gate.
