Some genius at my wife's work

Oct 5, 2017, 7:19 AM

Don’t go.

Re: Simple solution...

Oct 5, 2017, 7:35 AM

Possible solution. They usually throw like $10k parties for only 20 people so it's well worth it to go. The 2015 one was at the ritz on amelia island during our ACCCG with UNC. That hotel sucked dink and only had 1 tv in their little hotel bar that many people were crowded around. This one is dt charleston..not sure if the bar has TV's but I may have to make an early exit. And by early I mean before dinner even gets started

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Call the hotel and ask if the bar has TVs

Oct 5, 2017, 9:24 AM

The world has gotten so cheap. When I was 15 close to 30 years ago I was a bus boy at a somewhat nice touristy restaurant in Honolulu. My Christmas bonus was 200 dollars. The waiters got 400 dollars. They had all been there for years though generally.

wouldn't really call it a bonus.

it was .8% of my gross pay

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I probably haven't been to a company Christmas gig in

Oct 5, 2017, 8:59 AM [ in reply to The company should do away with this Christmas party and ]

a LONG time. For many years, the company would have a buffet dinner on a Tuesday night in early December at the Winthrop Coliseum, everyone would dress up in their Sunday best and eat like slophogs and there was NO alcohol, then the ancient president would stand up and give a financial overview of the company's past year in an hour long monotone. The finale would usually be some washed up hack entertainer that could be rented for a couple of hundred bucks. I went maybe my first two years with the company, and then never again.

About 15 years ago, they decided to make the Christmas party a casual drop-in after work at the Baxter Hood Center at York Tech, with heavy hors d'oeuvres created by the finest chefs in the entire School District 3 cafeteria community. And again NO alcohol, not wanting to risk offending Jesus and having the wrath of angry old testament God smiting everyone on the way home, I mean. The gala was replete with glorious door prizes from Dollar Tree, and sprinkled liberally with the festive glitter of company propaganda. The typical entertainment would be a local party band slogging their way through Christmas tunes that they had obviously put in a long hard 30 minutes practicing the night before. I went ONCE when they changed the format, and based on the experience of the previous galas at Winthrop, my wife refused to go at all.

Last year, they decided that since the elder generation that had been running the company for 60 years had all died or were dying that the money for a Christmas party was probably better spent on bonuses or lavish vacations for the new generation of the family ownership/management group. And honestly, it is most likely money better spent.

I'm surprised places even do company sponsored Christmas

I was sooo excited to wake up at 7 a.m. to see a real Ludwig set with Ziljans and all the accessories, but my dad made me swore not to play them until later in the day.

I couldn't' resist, though. I started banging on those drums and woke my parents up.

Lo and behold, my dad took me out in the yard and beat me senseless with a set of rusty jumper cables.

scramble to pack the car
drive to columbia for family lunch
scramble to pack the car
drive to Williston for family dinner
spend night and come home at some point

it alternated every year which place we went first, but i never got more than an hour to check out my toys before it was hit the road time.

i refuse to drag my kids through that. i am trying really hard to get all the family on the we are at our house and if you wanna see the grand kids, yeah c'mon.

Luckily my grandparents lived close, we'd go over there on Christmas eve, spend time with fam, and be home all day Christmas. I'm just glad neither of our parents are divorced, I know peeps who have to make 3-4 different stops. I'd be cutting ties with some of them.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

That would make it a little bit better

Oct 5, 2017, 10:19 AM

My biggest problem with Thanksgiving and Christmas is the travel and entire days spent off of work at someone else's house eating their cooking that I don't necessarily like, with people I see 4-5 times a year tops. Otherwise we have no interaction. What is the point in this? I don't mind eating with mine or my wife's parents and siblings, but once we start involving uncle's, aunt's, cousins, and people we're not even sure we're related to I think it gets excessive and unnecessary.

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-15yr.jpgringofhonor-lakebum1-110.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Agreed; thats too much.

Oct 5, 2017, 10:38 AM
