We're #1 in firearm deaths.....

This is in comparison to 13 other high-income countries...This is an area that needs improvement.
https://www.commonwealthfund.org/publications/2023/apr/health-costs-gun-violence-how-us-compares-other-countries
The U.S. has the highest rate of firearm deaths, nearly five times that of the second-highest country, France.
Eight times more people in the U.S. died from violence by firearm in 2019 than in the second-highest country, Canada.
The U.S. has the highest death rate because of self-harm by firearm, more than three times higher than rates in France and Switzerland.
More women in the U.S. are killed by firearms than in any peer country.
The U.S. has 67 million more firearms than it does people, a difference greater than the entire population of the U.K.

What about starvation deaths, hanging deaths, beheading deaths, stabbing deaths, kicked in the head by a mule deaths, fire ant bite deaths, rabies deaths, knocked in the head by a mace deaths, smothered by a pile of dirty laundry deaths, buried alive deaths, hit by train deaths, cholera deaths, mumps deaths, measles deaths, scarlet fever deaths, rubella deaths, contaminated water deaths, parasitic worms deaths, rat lung disease deaths, snake bite deaths, shark attack deaths, eating pillows in your sleep because you were dreaming about eating mutton deaths, picking your nose and getting rear ended by another car and it pushes your finger into your brain deaths, leaving a can of biscuits in your car and your air conditioner isn’t working, therefore that can of biscuits explodes and the top of it soars across your throat severing a jugular deaths?

Nice deflection....I'm terrified of rabies myself....

I'm not anti-gun. I own guns. I believe that 2A gives citizens gun rights. But we have to admit there's a cost here in human life.
And 2A allows for a "well=regulated militia". As a society, we need to think about what guns mean for us on a public health basis, and what type of regulation would help us to lower gun deaths while still allowing for gun ownership.
And deflecting from the topic to things like "rabies death" is a head-in-the-sand action.

We have far and away the most gun deaths of any similarly-situated country in the world.
If we had 50K people die from Rabies, I guess we could start a thread on that. But we don't.

So what do you propose? Lots of people think we should do "something" to lower gun deaths but they never offer a solution. We have laws governing who can legally possess a firearm and what kind of firearm can legally be possessed. What law do you propose?

I would treat it like a public health risk, much like driving cars....

I would make people go through licensing & testing to be able to own a gun. I would require safe storage in houses. I would require background for all gun sales, not just some. I would make it easier to own long guns and harder to own short guns. These are some of the things I'd do.
Our citizenry could still own guns. But it shouldn't be as easy as it currently is.
And I don't expect us to ever lower our murder rate to the same levels as alot of our peer countries. But we can lower it if we'll at least admit there's a contribution from guns to our murder problem.

The thing that sets us apart from the rest of the high-income developed world is the # of guns. We're overly cavalier about guns in this country, and that needs some reflection and adjustment.

How is one death any different than another death? Governments gas people, bomb people, and starve people by the millions but I guess that’s okay because they didn’t use guns.

And I haven't checked lately. But I doubt if New Zealand is slaughtering their citizens by the millions.
We have a problem with gun deaths in this country. And if we had fewer guns, we'd have fewer deaths.

What argument are you making?
New Zealand doesn’t have high crime rate because their citizens obey the laws.
The US is not worse off because of guns. It’s the people that misuse them that cause problems.

The argument is obvious (and correct).....

The reason we have so many more murders and suicides than these other countries is because we have so many more guns. Without all the guns, we'd have fewer suicides and fewer murders. To me, that's an easy - and correct - conclusion to come to.
I know you can't admit it because of reasons. But it's not controversial in the reality-based world.

So we have more murders than China and Russia and Iran and Saudi Arabia and Mexico?
Mexico is the most deadly place in the Western Hemisphere. How’s their gun control working out for them?
And once again, what law abiding citizen has murdered someone?
If you hate the fact that guns are easily available then start a movement to repeal the second amendment.

Nice attempt to dodge....
Apr 15, 2024, 4:25 PM

I'm talking about countries that are actually our peers....places with either similar income or similar level of economic activity and under some semblance of a democracy....
Why do we need to be far and away the murder capital of the developed world? It doesn't make sense, except we have a gun cult and aren't allowed to deal in any constructive way with the guns....

We are the ‘murder capital’ as you say (even though we are not) because people break the law.
It is really that simple.
Your logic equals. . .people die because of guns.
That means I’m fat because of my fork and spoon not because of what I choose to do with them.

I'm not saying I advocate that.
But if it happened, what would happen to our murder and suicide rate? You already know the answer to that question. Now...can you admit it out loud?

I don’t believe our suicide rate would decrease.
Murder rate may dip for a while, but people will find other ways to murder. Just like in China, Russia, Saudi Arabia, etc.

People would just find other ways to harm others and themselves, you’d see car and knife related homicides sky rocket and a run on leaping off over passes and drinking drain cleaner.

More government regulations equals more safety.

The focus should be on why people are randomly killing. Guns don't kill people. People kill people. I bet forks and spoons are responsible for 100x more deaths than guns.
