What were the big political events while you were at Clemson

For me it was the 1st Gulf War. I remember, soon after we invaded Iraq, we had a big basketball game that night (we won the ACC regular season that year, so we had a LOT of big games in LJ!). The Phoenix Suns' gorilla was there, too. At one point - beginning of the game, maybe? After the national anthem? - he jumped/climbed up onto the rim of one of the goals and the color guard handed him the American flag, which he waved back and forth while the arena erupted in cheers and chants of USA-USA-USA. Around campus, at least on west campus at Johnstone, kids had American flags hanging out of their windows. It was really cool seeing the unity at the time.
The Soviet Union fell apart during this time, too (I was scheduled to take Politics of the Soviet Union one semester, and by the time the semester started, there was no Soviet Union!), but that didn't really have an impact on campus like the Gulf War did.

We were at Clemson during the same time period. I remember learning that President Reagan was shot while I was eating in Harcombe.

I was in a physical science lab when we got the news about Reagan. One of the girls in my group was sure the person was telling us that Bill Atchley had been shot.

Hostage crisis ended in January of 81, so probably predates you a hair. The Berlin wall fell in 89 so it was a little after. It was a long time ago, we'll forgive you as long as the undergrad wasn't in history.

none, there was no TV in the dorms, we watched old tapes of the Simpsons and seinfeld. When we lived at University Place, we put our tV on the rail road tracks for fun and every dang one of us got a 3.5 and above that semester.

if you call running rabbit ears out on the balcony at Johnstone and experimenting with all kinds of different ways to wrap aluminum foil around the antennae, TV? I lived another 2-3 years without TV about 8 years ago when I lived near the everglades, on a dirt road and off well water that reeked of sulfur.. I had no idea what was going in the world, and it was lovely.

Look at the Millionaire bragging about a TV AND Rabbit Ears. Although, we had an 8-track deck with two massive 6 inch by 3 inch bookshelf speakers mounted on a 1x4 board. So yea, we were pretty cool.

Most important event Chanello's delivers 1st pizza to Clemson dorms. Delivery driver detained for unauthorized visit to campus. Does not hold up, as the driver was a student. Administrations folds, and allows on campus deliveries.

My time at Clemson got off to a terrible start for world
Aug 20, 2021, 5:12 PM
|
|
events.
1972: Murder of 11 Israeli athletes at the Munich Olympics by Palestinian terrorists.
You also had President Nixon's historic visit to China, a HUGE thing at the time.
Also, the beginnings of Watergate, which would eventually bring down Nixon's whole Presidency in 1974.
1973: On December 6th, Gerald R. Ford is sworn in as Vice President, having never been elected to an office higher than senator.
1974: The only winning season during my time at Clemson, 7-4 overall, but with the Undefeated Home Season and a Pepsi bottle to commemorate. I still have one. Watergate finally forces Nixon to resign, Gerald Ford becomes President, still having never been elected to an office higher than senator.
1975: Worst Clemson loss to the Coots, 56-20 at the Roach, I was there live in person to witness the debacle.
On the world stage, of course, Viet Nam. We got out of there just in time to keep myself and thousands of other soon to be graduates off the conveyor belt to senseless death over there. "Peace with Honor", they called it at the time. In reality, it turned out about like Afghanistan is turning out right now.
1976: Against all odds, and Marullo, I graduated. I do consider that a great world event. Also, we had a little thing called the American BiCentennial. Late in that year, I mistakenly elected my first Democratic President, Jimma Carter. He caused a new word to be added to the English lexicon. Can you say "Malaise" Boys and Girls? I knew you could. Eventually inflation around this time was running at something like TWENTY ONE PERCENT. For the next few years, got 10+% raises every year, and was rapidly losing ground to the economy.

Cade Carr was a nutcase student senator
Aug 21, 2021, 1:00 AM
|
|
who was threatened by his roommate’s participation in medieval role play (sca) and decided his roommate and friends were satanists who practiced animal sacrifice. Cade went so far as to post a picture of a dead rodent’s head on a stake at YBeach. He acknowledged that this particular rodent was his sacrifice - but he was re-creating an animal sacrifice ritual similar to what his roommate participated in. Beyond bizarre.

We’re going to war dude…. There I see one of the twin towers smoking. And would see the next get hit shortly after. Not really a political event but a very significant one. Fast forward 20 years…our leadership in 8 months of a term just botched the whole mission and leaves weapons, aircrafts, and American lives with any warning. Just like that this whole thing is worse than when we started. Unbelievable
