We just beat our rival in basketball by 14 points
Dec 18, 2021, 10:18 PM

|
and there are very few posts here about it.
Instead, the first page of posts is dominated by posts about one of our a football recruit’s high school games, our new football defensive coordinator, and college football bowl games.
Nothing wrong with football, but this is a classic example of how we don’t support basketball worth a crap at Clemson.
P.S. Please don’t tell me we are a boring team and that’s why people don’t care. We are easily a top 25-30 offense and shoot the three ball amazingly well. If you can’t get behind this team, you just don’t care about Clemson basketball.

I read 3 of their top 6 scorers didn't play due to COVID-19. But a win is a win. ISU won't be playing with their All-American running back in the bowl game. Tough break but someone will win that game. Hopefully, Clemson...

when we beat them this year, but I still saw a lot of posts here about that game. In fact, there are more posts on the front page today about our football game against them several weeks ago than there are about our basketball game against them tonight. You can’t make this stuff up!
Just admit it, most of our fans don’t care about basketball and many here go to great lengths to disparage our team.

General support has been lost due to past performance but all tigers enjoy our BB wins especially over the gamecocks. You don’t lose support over night and you don’t gain support over night. We were picked to finish 10th in the conference. That is hard to initially get excited about. We lost in the first round of ACC and NCAA tournaments last year. If this team starts winning on a consistent basis Littlejohn will fill up and more excitement will return. Go up and defeat a poor VA team on their floor that has a losing record and yes some excitement will start building. Hoping for a win at VA to even our conference record. We usually do not play well on the road and I blame Brad for that. Let’s see.

They still have a,winning record and are better than Miami. They play decent at home since the opening Navy and Iowa loses so I'll believe it when I see it. If we are going to beat them it is probably at home.

I don’t think it’s that deep, or a personal attack on you like it seems like you feel (or the basketball team). I think a big part of it is way the news covers it, I recently moved from SC to Kentucky and they spend a good 5 minutes every broadcast to I open the local news on any and everything UK basketball related, they even celebrated OSU beating Duke because they love hoop so much and hate their rivals, even claimed it as a win for the area since the coach is from Lexington. In Charleston no news station spends more than 1 minute updating whatever a score is or the happening with the basketball team… I have no point of reference for the rest of the state but when I visit Clemson it’s about the same, not much time dedicated to it. So this is a lot deeper than the fans, and I guess you could say ratings drove stories and coverage but here in Kentucky they are all in all the time even during football season. I guess my point would be, people who love hoop and Clemson love it regardless but generating excitement for a team that has struggled for 12 years is tough on a macro level, if we want more support we need more coverage, hype and stories… and for Tigernet forums that could be generated by the writers writing more stories about the team, players, recruits but it’s an after thought, we are lucky to get a game summary.
I loved watching the game last night, go Tigers, it’s a fun team… just my thoughts ??

Just some facts to prove the point
Dec 19, 2021, 9:38 AM
|
|
On the tigernet mobile page right now, 2 of the 47 last posted articles are basketball, the rest football, football recruiting and high school football. If you are upset with anyone, I would be with the tiger net staff JK, their forums are driven by what they cover and in 10 games into basketball season, they just don’t care to cover it at all, even when football had a down year… Football is king on Tigernet, that’s not right or wrong, I love both, but it’s a fact. So I would spend less time on the fans and more time focusing on the coverage, most of us don’t have the bandwidth to really dig and seek that coverage we just consume what we are fed.

I agree that a lot of it stems from regional tendencies when it comes to sports.

News outlets are going to cover what they feel their viewers want to know about, so it’s no surprise to me that basketball doesn’t get much press. They know most people don’t care that much.
And that is exactly my point - not enough Clemson people care enough about basketball for it to be a priority here. But paradoxically, they still care enough to complain about every little thing - if TNet message boards are any indication.
I’m not mad at anyone. I just wish people would support the team. Stop devoting so much energy complaining about the team, and stop looking for excuses not to get behind them. This whole notion that Clemson will support basketball if we played better is silly. We are plenty good enough to have better fan support, if people cared enough to begin with.
At the end of the day, they still wear Clemson on their uniforms.
Thanks for your post.

Agreed, UNC has as many loses as us and I would assume that doesn’t change the passion or coverage of the team in their area. I don’t know the solution, it’s a chicken before the egg scenario seems like, more coverage more exposure more support, more support more exposure more coverage. The Tigernet staff could help for this specific site by more basketball coverage if it’s something important to them, but I guess it’s all about clicks and they know what they need or want to drive traffic. Maybe we need a poster to start writing about the team, recruiting, etc like Clemson Paw did for a brief time. Again, don’t know the solution but sort of know the problem.

I agree it is 100% possible to be successful at Clemson the way things currently are, my point was more responding to JKs questions and concerns about a lack of interest or support, my points had nothing to do with the ability to have a good program.

Come on man stop acting like Football and basketball are on equal footing. Even if we were National contenders in basketball, football is still king and 99% of this board would choose a NC in football over basketball every day.
Also this is not a good team and we beat a SC team missing 3 starter. Haha comparing the bball team missing three starters to their football team missing a few players is not even close. 85 scholarship players to what 15? Don’t make me laugh.

Everyone here is aware that football is king at Clemson.
It’s like the joke about vegans and CrossFitters. How do you know that someone is a vegan or a CrossFitter? They tell you immediately and won’t stop talking about it.
The same is true about Clemson football fans. We know. Everyone knows.

This one post belies all of your total bs about our basketball program.
“Most” of our fans don’t care about basketball - an undefinable non-fact that is so ambiguous and absurd it can’t be quantified therefore can’t be taken seriously.
“Many here” further ambiguous meaningless bs. Certainly plenty on here bash our team just as you have done to our football team, fans, and athletes relentlessly.
All of this is pure tripe meant to imbue yourself a sense of superiority.

If you’ll notice, I didn’t post here until well after the game was over. I was enjoying the game and the win.
When I dis log on, I went to the basketball posts and liked a bunch of them and commented on some. I was surprised (even though I shouldn’t have been) by the lack of posts about our win.

I really just don’t think people care anymore, you’re not wrong. In my experience, some of our OP teams were more competitive and exciting, had crowds that some insiders ranked the toughest in the country to play against.
An exciting offensive scheme with high pressure were also things people came to see. BB has done nothing to make people come out, and though I support him it’s just true. People didn’t stop caring for no reason.

Yes, there are certainly reasons why people seemingly care little about basketball.
Dec 18, 2021, 10:32 PM
[ in reply to Re: We just beat our rival in basketball by 14 points ] |

Such as:
1. Clemson football’s success (which we didn’t have when Barnes and Purnell teams were well supported - our football was atrocious to mediocre then)
2. More distractions today (more things to watch and do).
3. People are more discerning today about how they spend their time and money, especially during the pandemic.

Atrocious to mediocre is fair when we are talking about mid-90s to ‘00s.

[ in reply to We have never been “atrocious” in football. ] |

During the Rick Barnes era, from 94-98, our football record was 30-28. Our basketball team was 74-48.
During the Oliver Purnell era, from 2003-2010, our football record was 62-40. Our basketball team was 138-90.
The point is that football, though still clearly the most popular sport at Clemson during those eras, was not good during most of those years and was pretty bad at times.
I don’t think it’s an accident that the eagerness to support basketball then was much higher. Obviously basketball having some good years then had something to do with fan enthusiasm as well, coupled with the fact that people’s expectations and standards for entertainment were lower then.
Now, people are more ADD than ever when it comes to entertainment and are much quicker to “change the channel” when something doesn’t excite them.

So Coach Brownell and his program bear no responsibility for the loss of fan interest in Clemson men's basketball?
Such as:
1. Rarely making the NCAA basketball tournament.
2. Propensity for late game collapses.
3. Long periods of scoring droughts with no seeming ability to combat the issue.

competitive team on the court.
If you look at Brad’s teams, we are extremely competitive.
We have been in 2 of the last 3 NCAA Tournaments. One of those seasons was one of the best in program history. Last year we finished in the top five of the ACC and were a top 30 seed in the NCAAs. This year, we have the best offense in the Brownell era.
Unfortunately, some of our fans still ask for more before they will support the team. It’s illogical for anyone who claims to be a basketball fan to not find these teams the last few years exciting and worth supporting.

It seems that many people here enjoy complaining and criticizing a loss more than they enjoy celebrating a win.
Thus the point of my post.

I did enjoy the win over the coots.
The Good: Great rebounding and Clemson needs to find a way for Hemenway to get more looks, the kid can shoot. PJ Hall is going to be a monster. Tyson had a great game.
The Bad: reminded me of past CBB teams when Clemson went up by 25 and then let the coots back in the game. Very poor 3 point shooting tonight (something CU has done very well this year).
What is the deal with Frank Martin? no hair at all not even eyebrows.....

Yes they were down 5 players, but in BB as long as you have 7 you can win. The Bucks were missing 7 the other night including Yannis & still won. We were missing 23 in FB but still won 30-0. Great win go Tigers

I really like this team. A good mix of young and seasoned players. Brownell hit a home run with Collins and Bohannan, they play well together. Honor and Dawes can be deadly inside or out. PJ and Tyson compliment each other well. PJ is going to be awesome! He and Tyson are a force together.
Why wouldn’t you be excited for this team?
Go Tigers!

I guarantee you if we were as good as Tennessee, Auburn and Bama which are big football schools in basketball we would be filling LJ up. Again, Pearl is a cheater but the winning brings fans so they get support.

Every school will support a major sport when they are really good.
Dec 19, 2021, 4:17 PM
|
|
That’s not something to write home about.
How many schools support basketball when it’s just good, or even average? When it’s competitive and improving but not quite over the hump yet? When the team really needs support and a home court advantage? That’s the mark of a fan base that’s passionate about basketball.
Some here have compared our basketball program to the Coots’ football program. The difference is that their fans support football really well, regardless of the season or the coach. That isn’t true for Clemson basketball.

So wait, you are on a football board, complaining that people are not talking about a 14 point win over a covid depleted team in another sport? I think there is a basketball room for that, but what do I know?

Btw, to your specific points: 1) Cade is a winner and people ARE excited about him. 2) Most don't care about Men's BB. Last player I really recall of significance was Horace Grant. 3) Making the field of 64/65 every year for one game and ACC tournament woodshedding dosnt really move the meter to bring in new fans either

Honestly quit watching college and pro bball back a few years ago. Not the same game as it used to be. When I realized Clemson would never get a fair game in UNC and in Duke just lost interest. Calipari and others just recruit 5 McDonald All Americans that will play one season and go pro. Hard to keep up with. Pro game you can palm the ball and they call it a great crossover and they get at least 3 steps to the basket. It’s just bad overall for me. I’m from the south and I will turn on a hockey game before I watch a bball game. Honestly and I’m telling the truth I could not tell you the last bball game I have watched. Sad I used to play a little in school and would never miss a Bulls game. Maybe it’s my age I don’t know.

I was not able to attend the event basketball game but was able to watch on tv. If Comcast had not flipped the ACCN switch on Friday, I would have had to listen on the radio. A great win for Clemson.
Folks on here on the football board, myself included, are also excited for Cade and his state title win last night. He is going to do great things under center at Clemson.
As far as the chickens playing without starters, let me say this. If they had beaten an injury riddled Clemson football team last month, there would have been no asterisk by the win. They would have been crowing from the top of their beaks. I am certainly not going to give them a pass.
Yesterday was a great day to be a Clemson fan. Go Tigers!

My thoughts on your post.
Dec 19, 2021, 6:44 AM

Well, you probably won’t appreciate this response to your post, but IMO is what has happened. I believe there was strong support for Clemson basketball when CBB came to Clemson. No, we were not Indiana, UNC, Kentucky, etc, but we did enjoy the games and excited to see games due to the style and level of play from Purcell. The ACC was strong then. During the past 10 years, the oxygen has been sucked out of the room, much like a balloon losing its air, it did not pop, but slowly lost air year by year. At that same time, the ACC has dramatically dropped in top to bottom strength and this year may be the worst on record. You are a huge basketball supporter, ok, I get it and good for you. Most of us are Clemson supporters, but have become numb to both the wins and losses. This past year, your posts have blamed multiple things for the apathy, from stadium, to pay, and then you have posted multiple negative things regarding football and like today’s post try and compare the two. Clemson wins 3 in a row, nice, against inferior or Covid teams - and you seem to think that fans should be going crazy and after 10+ years, the air in the balloon should magically reinflate. It does not work that way. First, the fans have seen more of the same this year, even with more talent. Then, we get your post criticizing and saying BB over achieves. I believe many don’t believe that when the ACC has gone south, and we stay the same, that we somehow have moved forward. I think they backed up, badly. I can only speak to my own thoughts, but I believe you are missing the toll that the past 10 years have taken on the fans. It is not a light switch that can simply by flipped. It will take time - improved play against teams equal to Clemson, it will take the ACC to get much better - before the balloon starts to refill. JMO anyway.

I know Judge loves his basketball, but come on. Shooting 32% doesn’t make a top 25-30 offense. I admit I will check the scores to see how we did because it’s Clemson, but I lost interest in this team the 3rd or 4th time they blew a double digit halftime lead and lost. It’s a new season but the same ol’ narrative.

I would think that a dominant win over our rival would result in some excitement or at least pleasure though.
Instead, the few basketball posts I’ve seen have talked more about us “blowing a big lead” (which we didn’t) or “barely beating them” (which we also didn’t) than simply being pleased with a nice win.
Further, there have been more posts diminishing our win by saying that the Coots were missing key players than there have been congratulating our players for doing what was necessary to win.
If people want to suspend judgment because of past frustrations with our team, or apathy over what they perceive as a stagnant decade, that’s fine. But why can’t they do that while still supporting the team and enjoying the win? Those concerns are still no excuse for not supporting the team you claim to care about.
Which is why I have concluded that many of our fans either don’t care about basketball or even enjoy criticizing it. The proof is in the pudding. If we want to be better, then doing our part to support the team has to be part of it.

A win over our rivals in any sport should be celebrated.
Dec 19, 2021, 10:54 AM
|
|
For that matter, shouldn’t all wins be celebrated?
Why the constant harping here on the other team and who played or who didn’t?
Nobody is saying that this was a season-defining win over a top team. But it was still a good win.
What’s so hard about that?

I don’t have any delusion that most of our fans will ever care as much about basketball as they do football. I’ve accepted that and am fine with it.
But I don’t see why basketball still can’t be a very important second priority. And I really don’t understand why some of our fans seem to go out of their way to undermine the basketball program.

Well technically they were down five key players or half the bench. This is a great win but at the same time, you don’t flaunt it in the other teams face when they are at 50% capacity. Your passion is obvious but I don’t think this is the example that we should rally around.

So we can only get excited about a win under certain circumstances?
Dec 19, 2021, 10:51 AM
|
|
In that case, we shouldn’t have gotten excited about most of our football wins this year because they were over significantly overmatched teams from a talent standpoint.
But people were still happy for the win and celebrating it. As they should, because as Dabo said, the fun is in the winning.

I admit it... Football is a much better sport to watch than basketball or soccer. Don't get me wrong, I love Clemson and want them to win everything. Me posting about basketball during the game on here isn't going to make us any better or worse. If given a choice I'd watch Australian rules football before watching basketball. GO CLEMSON TIGERS BASKETBALL ?? TEAM!

The problem is that fans don’t believe that we are building something either this year or in the long term. Brad or whoever the next coach is needs to get people excited about the future to care about the present.

Late to the post, but love seeing a big b-ball win over the ##### regardless of who played or didn’t play. Think this team can put together a good season. Just taking a bit to gel with all the lineup changes vs last year.

You are right Judge. Brownell has driven enthusiasm for basketball so low that people have stopped paying attention. Seems like a coaching change may be needed.

Ahh so it’s Brownell’s fault that our fan support for basketball is crappy.

We should have won by 30 seeing how they were missing almost half their team. However don't really care about basketball, but do care about stomping our rivals always.

LOL, we're 101st in Scoring Per Game.
Oh the lengths you'll go to attempt to disparage our fan base and be passive aggressive against our Football program.
I absolutely love that your schtick is now getting the negative response that it deserves. You're nothing more than a troll at this point.

Not really seeing your point, here.
I used to love watching Clemson basketball, and now it’s just not that exciting.
What do you want me to do? Pretend like it’s fun to watch now?

Because that’s the kind of treatment our football program gets.

We played a good game. Really awesome to see so many shooters on a Clemson team at the same time. We have a lot to look forward in conference play - our biggest tests lie ahead. If Naz can become a dependable factor we should be a very tough out.
Go Tigers! Beat the Hoos!

And years. Tyson has gotten better every year, Hall is much better than last year. The little guards were off shooting today, however they handled the ball well and played good d. Chase Hunter is better than last years. Hemingway is better than last year. And overall, they appear to be improving game by game.

I thought it was a great win! I know they had some players out, but you have to look at how we played as well. You have to look at more than the opponent.
I thought we played very well and i like that we look better each week. Its a shame the next home game is dook, i hope we don't lose momentum if we lose that game.

I think Brownell runs a clean program but if this team isn't ahead by double digits by the 8:00 mark in the 2nd half, they find ways to lose. That is the most frustrating part about Brownell. The guy's record in games decided by 6 points or less is terrible and unfortunately in league play, most games end up in this category. The program under him will always be clean but also always have a ceiling that isn't that high unfortunately.....
