It's not the school, it's the donors. This is why we are at a disadvantage.

similar to what has made us successful for the past decade. But we double down on it.
There will still be kids (who are also good football players) who want something meaningful and developmental…instead of just chasing the quick cash and the Instagram life. If you don’t believe that, you have a very bleak outlook on life… and I’m sorry.
It may involve spending more money, like to expand the PAW Journey, etc. But we would not just be doling out bags of cash to recruits.
You all can want Clemson to be a cheap follower and play a losing game. I prefer to hope for something else.

in the current state of college football.
it may not be next year or the year after, but at some point in the much nearer future than you're willing to understand we'll be back to mediocrity and the top 10-12 richest programs will be in a league of their own.
unless the "rules" are changed and/or regulated/policed...........and let's be honest, we know that's not happening.

on what we've done the last decade........you're essentially saying keep doing the same.
you can hope all you want............the TRUE SOLUTION is for a GOVERNING body intervene and put regulations, stipulations, policing, real rules in place for this portal & NIL stuff..............that's the ONLY solution, but who is going to do that?

Clemson can only control what they can control.
So now you’re saying to sit around and just hope the legislation changes? Good luck with that. I hope it changes, too. But doubt it will.
I get that you’re not much of a critical thinker. That’s fine. But sometimes doing what you’re already good at and doing it even better….is a solution. You don’t just have to follow the crowd and become a loser in a sea of losers.

ironic you say I'm not a critical thinker when you're the one saying let's keep doing the same thing over and over and over w/o changing...........definition of insanity??
and No i'm not advocating for Clemson to just "sit around and hope things change".......I personally think NOTHING will change the NIL stuff................so, that means that Clemson will have to adapt and change........not do what you're suggesting and not change.

Guess what… I’m pretty sure our results have been pretty dang good. We don’t want different results.

not the way it's currently operating.
we'll be essentially irrelevant if 3-4 years as a program, barring some BIG regulations w/ NIL and/or Portal.
I expect in 5 years there will be multiple divisions. There has always been a resource gap between universities. Why do we have FBS and FCS today?

This is how you do it in the Brave New World we live in. It does not guarantee a national title, but you will stockpile high end talent year over year. If I coordinated this stuff, I would be wearing out the Delaware Secretary of State website with registering closely held entities to harbor these slush funds. These players would be signing for great $, but with K protections for the boosters, clawback provisions, etc. Eventually, these provisions will tilt more toward the players when other schools get it together and offer more favorable player K's to woo players. Also, if I were a top end player these days, you are incented to enter the portal each year to see who the highest bidder would be (Bryce Young, etc.). It may be your current school and you drop back out of the portal and stay home. Or maybe not.... Fun days my friends.

How long before the LLC donors decide that their player isn't worth investing in any more? Player A gets injured, or stays injured, or just doesn't match their 4-5 star rating? The donor take the money away. This is really going to be fun to watch then next couple of years. Who is really in charge? My bet is with the money...

The NCAA deferred to Conferences/State Laws to control.
Jan 4, 2022, 12:01 PM
|
|
There are inconsistencies that don't put colleges on the same level field. The Texas law even has a section that says the federal government must act to ensure consistency and competitive fairness. The Texas law also like SCs states that the $ can't be used to attend/tie an individual to a particular institution. The question becomes, who is the enforcement arm? what are the penalties? my guess is that really wasn't defined. Laws are being broken, but the states aren't enforcing. NCAA still requires state law to be followed as part of their guidelines and they should be hitting schools with lack of institutional control for not controlling their boosters but will they do the right thing when their enforcement arm has been cowering for years. Federal regulation to restore competitive balance will be needed to restore any balance to the system or further division of universities that want to allow this garbage pro stuff and those that don't. I had read or heard about a month ago that NCAA had started investigation Miami and BYU for their NIL set-up. Seems TAM and some others need to be added to that list if they haven't been.

The NCAA got exactly what it wanted

Players got control of their NIL and the NCAA made sure the money didn't come from the NCAA. SC passed laws to "control" NIL
https://www.jdsupra.com/legalnews/guide-to-nil-in-south-carolina-for-2762169/
Per SC Law, "You cannot enter NIL contracts contingent on participation or performance in your sport." Everyone knows that crap is going to change real soon. No way is a donor group going to continue to pay a injured or under performing player for four years. These contracts are going to be year to year real soon. Also, what is a players NIL value going to be when they enter the portal because they don't get the playing time they wanted at their current school? Who are the idiots at the new school that are going to give them a large NIL contract knowing they didn't cut it at the previous school.
These donors aren't stupid with their money. I give it 5 years max and it will all hash out.

strategy by some programs as being on par with George Steinbrenner's 1980's Yankees spending spree. He went out and threw big money at stars who couldn't ultimately win games together because the chemistry was off. It was the Yankees' farm system that ultimately provided them a nucleus of talent for their 1990's run, augmented by free agents, but not built on them.
Yes, you have to have the Jimmys and the Joes to win big in football, but you also have to have the right Jimmys and Joes that respect and work for each other in order to get the most out of them, game in and game out. There is little room for error in college football. If your roster is full of kids who are there primarily because of money, if that is the guiding principle, I'm going to find it hard to believe that will translate into the type of relentlessly consistent on-field success necessary to win championships.
Any program looking to be competitive must participate in this landscape, but relying on it too heavily to drive the boat IMO will lead to disappointment. You build your house on sand and when the rains come it will wash away. Build your house on a rock, though, as Dabo has shown us through his tenure here, then you're built to last.
Go Tigers.

Look at all the doom and gloom. Assuming this is true, bc why wouldn't it be, Texas A&M was lazy about it. You can't go making it obvious, which they did. Now the rest of CFB can come crashing down on them. NCAA states: "as long as they do not violate pay-for-play or receive financial incentives to sign with or remain at a program."
Think about the turmoil coming to that locker room when the upperclassmen have to see these kids in spring. Think about those mysterious "donors" who thought this was a one-shot, and now has to shell it out every year!? Rich people don't get rich by giving their money away.
Get your popcorn out.

There will be a logjam at the Portal after players get wind of Caleb Williams' NIL deal with his new team. If you have a good season and still have college eligibility, go straight to the Portal. Sit back and and take the highest offer. It's now total free agency every year, and the player's current school can't do a thing about it.

It would seem every program depends on donors for some portion of their budget. Any money a donor uses to attract a player is money not going into the program budget. If I’m an AD I’d much rather have donations I control then money floating around in bozo booster hands. I don’t see this lasting, ADs won’t allow it or it will blow up on them eventually.

Here is how it reportedly plays out in College Station: A coach identifies a recruit that he wants to target. That coach tells a “point donor.” The “point donor” gathers other donors around him. Those donors create an LLC. The LLC, in turn for a commitment, sponsors the targeted recruit. That recruit, upon arrival on campus, receives money from the LLC. In turn, the recruit promotes the LLC and its “cause,” whether that be a charity or a business. According to SlicedBread, the Aggies even have a backstop in place. The deals are structured to keep players in College Station for multiple years.
Contracts are set up as multi-year deals. If a player leaves, he leaves the money behind in Texas.
NIL has changed the landscape of college football and what A&M is doing is completely legal and clearly effective.
Not only do the Aggies have the No. 1 recruiting class for 2022, but they currently hold the No. 2-ranked class for 2023. They all-but print money in College Station and it is really paying off. Literally.
