I’m watching from my phone so it was hard to tell but it looked to me like it hit fair about 6’ from the plate on the first hop.

You could see the dirt it kicked up when it hit in fsir territory. Maybe the ump thought that was a Pirate smoke signal.

Umps (college and MLB) rotate clockwise, so he was at home plate for whatever midweek game this crew officiated prior to yesterday’s game. He’ll be at 2nd for game 2 and 1st for game 3 today.
