TER Introduction.

Sep 18, 2023, 6:48 PM

A brief explanation. TER stands for Team Efficiency Rating. It is a formula I developed about 15 years ago (or maybe longer). It takes 4 stats (total offense, total defense, points scored, points allowed) and comes up with a rating.

It has weaknesses, for sure. The two biggest ones are listed below. I'll be glad to give a more detailed description if anyone is interested. But, it's just a simple formula I came up with that seems to be fairly accurate by the 8th game or so. Don't worry about the raw numbers. Just look at them as a comparison. A TER of 1.5 is better than a TER of 1.0, but it doesn't mean the team with the higher rating is 1.5 times better than the team with the lower rating.

Weaknesses
1. It does not take into consideration the strength of the opponent. Beating UGA gives no or more less value than beating Vanderbilt.

2. Early in the year, stats may be very skewed. As the season progresses a TER of 2+ is elite. Every year I have run it no team has won the national championship with a TER less than 1.75. And, I don't think I've ever had a team finish the season with a TER of 2.4 or higher.

I took the top 10 teams plus Clemson and ran the stats. Here are the results.

Mich 3.32
OH ST 2.85
UGA 2.75
USC 2.17
Penn ST 2.14
Wash 2.06
Ore 1.82
FSU 1.82
ND 1.79
Texas 1.56
Clemson 1.03

Actually makes sense to me…..just as an indicator. I hope AND expect our Tigers to advance in the TER during the season. Go Tigers.

I like stats. Just curious what the 2015-2020 run of Clemson teams looks like in this metric compared to the other teams in that time frame. Reason being Dabo plays a LOT of depth chart guys that might push their metrics down. Obviously I don't watch as many Alabama vs. Sister Mary Schools as I do Tigers vs. them. I don't recall the top tier schools playing quite as many depth guys as early as Clemson does in those games. I could be wrong there.
