Salary cap issues are making teams in the NFL make some

truly bizarre decisions. Take Minnesota, for example. EVERYBODY knows that offensive left tackle is one of the most important positions on your team, due to his being the primary protector of your QB. Yesterday, Minnesota cut their starting left tackle, not because he was not a good player for them, but because his salary was deemed too high for the salary cap. So, just like many teams are doing, they INTENTIONALLY made their team worse to save money. Just another impact of this "Wuhan Flu" pandemic.

High salaries have caught up with them. Basketball is next. Some athletes make so much money that some think they know more than anyone else like Lebron.

As long as they kneel in the NFL and Lebron is playing in the NBA, I just attend college football. MLB is next on my list to stop woke viewing, but I still have season tickets left over from last year. Save money that is easy to spend it on travel following Clemson, hunting, etc... I don't even miss pro sports now. The salaries for pro sports will collapse along with the TV ratings. DW4 got his deal at the right time, but the cap probably means he is stuck with the Texans.

And risking the health of their QB at the same time. Things like this should be dealt with through the players union ASAP. If a QB isn't going to be given the best protection possible from his blind side, that is the time that the QB should be saying #### no. If your team isn't going to do everything to give them protection, it is time for those QB's to be asking to be traded bc of safety reasons!!!

agents at nearly every position. Then, nearly all the same names will be reshuffled at lower salaries to different teams. Frankly, I am surprised that the NFLPA isn't getting going on an "owner collusion" claim to indirectly lower total player salaries league wide.

One of the main reasons teams have to cut OL is because the quarterbacks make so much money. If a QB is upset about his OL to the point of refusing to play then he could always take a reduction in salary in order to allow his team to build better around him?

Yeah he did. I guess it's also easier to take a little less money each season whenever you're planning on playing for 25-30 seasons.

What are you even talking about?
1) Get out of here with your racist comments on Covid 2) You want a 32 yo O-lineman comprising 7% of your total cap spend? It's a wonder you aren't a GM!
Clearly you're the smartest man in the room. I mean in a 5 second read I've already learned that MN drafted Ezra Cleveland to be their eventual left tackle. a 22 yo making less than 1% of your cap spend seems a lot more sensible.
Its a business, man....

It's not to "save money". It's to comply with the rules of the league. They have to be under the salary cap. Your statement would only make sense if they didn't spend up to the cap, which is not the case.

My point is, the owners and the NFLPA get together each year

and use some complicated formula to arrive at the salary cap. Since the cap is approved by the players, you would think the teams, players and their agents would be willing to renegotiate existing contracts to get under the cap. It DOES get done some of the time, but more often, players move from team to team like chess pieces instead.

The cap is collectively bargained and is a direct result of league revenues. The league isn't just arbitrarily adjusting the cap year to year. Since revenues plummeted last year due to decreased attendance and viewership, and increased league costs, the cap comes down. It's pretty basic economics.

I read where Minnesota made an offer to him to redo his contract and take a reduction in salary, but he turned it down. If a player is currently making 12 million per year, and his team wants him to change that to 8 million per year in order to not cut him, and that player feels he can find another team to pay him the 12 million then he's not going to accept the 8 million in most cases.
At least this does create some sense of balance in the rosters, and forces teams to make smart decisions in order to run their team. Of course, some teams constantly make stupid decisions anyway. The players are earning a ton of money so I don't think they're getting screwed over or anything.

levels in 2022 (some very lucrative broadcasting contracts in the works for the NFL), so a lot of teams are just doing fancy restructuring to lessen hits this year and take bigger ones over the next couple. Like how Dak's cap hit is only gonna be 22 or 25 mil this year, despite signing that 40mil/year contract.
Still, some surprise partings already, like KC's tackles and Kyle Van Noy for the Dolphins. Free agency will be interesting when the free agents and their agents realize there simply isn't enough cap space to give them the contracts they want.

Annual cap casualties are a result of the NFL's cap being "hard" compared to the NBA and MLB. It allows teams to dump overpaid players depending on how their contacts are structured. This is one reason you see teams go from worst to first and it's no big shock.
The hard cap and lack of guaranteed contracts allow the NFL to treat players as assets and commodities more than people. The other leagues do it also but not to the same extent.
Each team will have a player or two you wouldn't expect to be cut.
That all said, the Chiefs cutting BOTH starting OTs is exceptional. But obviously they have a plan.

I think they're paying so much for Mahomes, Hill, and Kelce that they're going to have to make a lot of sacrifices over the next few years.

Mahomes left money on the table specifically

so the Chiefs could reach an agreement with Chris Jones. Going forward, he will renegotiate several times to clear up cap money. All highly paid QBs do this.
Kelce and Hill are so productive they are worth it. That is, if they continue being spectacular. If either begins to show decline, Chiefs will have to cut them after this coming season.
All things considered, the Chiefs aren't in bad shape going forward. If they continue to draft decently, they should be contenders for years to come.
