Running back is going to be a problem at Clemson
May 4, 2022, 1:31 AM
|

I want to start this post by saying none of this is Spiller's fault. Recruiting is a team effort.
We got 3 decent starters and one star with Ship. We got absolutely nothing behind them and not a single decent recruit in the pipes.
How does this happen to a team who's won 2 natties fairly recently?
This is going to be an issue.

I used to think you knew a little something. Mafah is a monster and Pace is a guy who just keeps on Chooglin' and they BOTH can catch the ball can run like hell, THEN there's Shipley, who can do it all! Man we are LOADED at RB and just because YOU may not not know about it, there's more like them on the way!
The machine is just staring to get crunk up a bit. We're gonna be something to see when we're well, and not get sick much! Talk about a Golden Age??! Get READY!!!
For the opposition, it's gonna be "Pick your Poison", We're gonna be able to tun over you, around or through you or slice you to pieces with the passes, so pick your poison. because Clemson IS coming. And our Defense is gonna be SUFFOCATION,= and STRANGLING. OPPONENTS WON'T BE ABLE TO BUY POINTS!!:>) 1

I honestly don’t get this type of thinking. “Can’t get a top RB because we are stacked”. Bama, GA, OSU, etc. are stacking talent behind talent. What we are seeing is not a result of who we have on our current roster. It’s with out a doubt a result of NIL.
Our best hope is for NIL regulation. That’s JMHO.

Bama was so stacked, they had to go to the transfer portal, and pick up a GT back They've even had to search for transfers at WR

Fact is we recruited lights out before NIL. Now we are struggling to land those same type of players that helped us win the titles. Say cop out all you want but to think it isn’t working against is ignorance.

Three of the best ever?
Where do you put our current backs when compared to: Spiller, J Davis, Ettiene, Gallman, Ellington, Priester, Allen, Cone?
I agree our top three options are all very good and have the potential to be great but to say they are three of our best ever is untrue at this point. Again, I love your optimism.

You can’t talk logic to people anymore. Kobe, Phil, and Will all have 3 more years at Clemson. I don’t see why you need more than 3 solid running backs on a roster. Any more than that they will transfer. I believe they all 3 stay all 3 years. The nfl don’t draft running backs early anymore. Don’t need a running back this recruiting cycle. If we get one that’s a bonus.

It’s difficult to imagine all three of them coming back next year. If Pace has a big year, he likely heads to the draft. If that happens, next years RB room…
Shipley Mafah Adams Jr Jarvis Green???

Pace heads to the draft? The first RB taken was 36th
May 4, 2022, 10:11 AM
|
|
In the NFL Draft this year. It gets worse every year for them. All 3 RBs have 3 years of eligibility left. It’s likely one will transfer at some point but I’m sure we’ll have another by then. And for the record, I think Adams is highly underrated. He was basically off the radar because of covid, moving and where he played. There are much more higher priority positions at RB that we need to be concerned about to keep the train rolling.

I honestly hope you're right. By all estimations, he was a second fall-back after UGA came in a scooped our first fall-back RB from our noses.
I mean, his best offer besides ours, what? Army? I watched his film. Seems like a tuff kid without a lot of top-end speed. Who knows, maybe he turns out to be a stud. I hope so anyway.

RBs also want to get into the NFL earlier so they can be in their mid-20s when their second contract comes. Their shelf life is so short, the longer they wait, the older they'll be when their second contract comes. Not being a first rounder helps too. They'll be off their rookie contract in 3-4 years. Pace would be 25 when he's up for a second contract. Teams would be more likely to spend big money on him.

Why are you suddenly convinced Pace is going to the NFL. He’s on No draft boards. He’ll do better in NIL than as a late round RB pick. We’re more likely to lose someone to the portal than to the draft - and that means someone is not getting enough carries. Which would invalidate most of this argument.

6.2 yards per carry behind our offensive line was pretty incredible, especially considering it was his first year of real experience. He has great size, power, and enough speed.
I believe if he has another big year, he’s gone.

how does hardly anyone but you see this catastrophe at RB?
Shoot, all three of those dudes missed games to injury last year. Adams Jr will get plenty of carries this year. I hope we hit on that dude, but something tells me he'd not ever see the field at a place like UGA.

We can't miss on a RB this year. We can't go into 2023 with only Shipley and Mafah. We would be one injury away from Adams Jr and Jarvis Green getting serious reps. It's possible they are underrated, but it should still worry us.

We just haven't adapted to modern CFB recruiting in the NIL era. It also appears that we will never use the portal in any significant capacity. At some point the coaches are going to have to start taking responsibility for it.

It's not going to get much better.........
May 4, 2022, 10:58 AM
|
|
Just speaking generally, not for the RB position itself. Look at our WR 2-deep.........even if fully healthy it doesn't hold a candle to the WR rooms of the 2012/2013-2019 era of Clemson football.
You could see it coming for the last 2-3 years.
Dabo has: -been slow to respond to our Transfers OUT (we've averaged 7-8 transfers/year since 2016ish) -refused to utilize the portal, unless you're a former player -stingy w/ HS offers leaving us with panic fallbacks and/or walk-ons -been very outspoken on his "opposition" on the direction of college football (which I agree w/ BTW), but also refuses to adapt to the change.............you don't have to like it, but you have to adapt to it and live with it or you get left behind. -prerequisite for most every assistant coach hire seems to be former player or an Ole Bama buddy

Yes, more than just the rb position, skilled player recruiting in general has taken a dip the last few years. I guess we could bury our head and ignore it though.

No it will not! Our three RB's will establish such a running game with our improved O line and faster paced play-calling that future running backs will want to come here! Trust me on that! As long as they start catching the ball out of the backfield and down field!!!!
