Portal players chances of actual playing time

Dec 6, 2022, 8:43 AM

If you’re a kid in the portal and looking at schools, what does the DJ saga make you think about your chances of actual playing time at Clemson? If Nick Chubb transferred into Clemson (a hypothetical scenario) there’s no way Dabo would start him ahead of Shipley. It’s a real perception problem.

Since we have no history of taking portal players how is this a problem? I would also say that Dabo has history of starting young talent at every other position other than QB (examples include our RT and Willimas at WR). He handles this position differently than all the other positions for a reason.

For the most part, players assessing the depth chart...

has always been and will continue to be a component of the recruiting process. That's largely the case regardless of whether you're a high school kid or a player in the portal.

I think each person in the portal has a chance at playing time at other schools but.... I dont think someone like DJ is just gonna up and go to a contending school and just take the starting job... Now look at Cade McNamara from michigan he is transferring to Iowa. He has a huge percent chance that he will be there No1 QB next year. But Cade wouldnt be able to make a more latteral move to say an Ohio state and do the same... But a number of these players can go to the mid tier teams and potentially be more productive. I think DJ ends up at a West coast school and probably does better out there where defenses are typically not as blitz heavy and the passing game is alot more BIG play oriented.

Dabo was not born last night and Nick Chubb would would be RB1 from day 1.

QB is pretty much the only position that doesn't rotate players in and out.

GA frequently had 2 running backs drafted into the NFL and only one was the "starter."

I'm more concerned about bringing in a top player affecting the team chemistry and culture of the program.

It really does need to be targeted individuals and that's hard without illegal contact and paying them like SEC schools do.
