Ohio State misses on 5-star Recruit due to NIL
Dec 13, 2022, 9:35 PM
|
|
On NIL: “Ohio State missed out on a 5 star recruit because they could not pay him even half of what he was looking for. They didn’t get him over $750k.
UGA offered the kid 1.8M to sign and 800k/season... OSU couldn't get him more than 500K."

I feel your pain. I give it another 5 years.
Heck right now it is the NFL without contracts.
They have to get this thing under control and make some flipping rules. It is the “Wild Wild West” right now.

Let’s be honest. The traffic between Ohio and South Carolina is ALL in one direction….there’s a reason for that.
I’m not sure why Ohio even needs inbound lanes, ain’t nobody trying to get to Ohio.

Know y'all are joking. Funny, haha. But this is serious sad state of affairs. I feel for osu because that's us too. It's sickening. We all knew uga was sleezy with the mcbags..but not they can do it openly.
Yeah, I want osu to lose every game but do we really want 3 or 4 teams with bought players winning the natty each year? I don't but that's what is happening.

I don’t feel sorry for OSU. They have as much money as any team in the country. They could have paid the kid if they chose to. On the other hand, UGA continues to show they are a big part of the problem with college football.

I am joking……sort of. I don’t care for Bucknuts or UGA. In my experience, it does not matter what the rules are, the cheats are gonna cheat. Write new rules, make more rules, have politicians and their wives give speeches, form new agencies, put adds on TV with celebrities and legends…..doesn’t matter. Cheats are gonna cheat, that IS what they are.

Congratulations, you have won 3.5 million US dollars in the Nigerian lottery. You have a tax liability and as a Solicitor, I can facilitate your transaction. After you receive a check of $8,000 to help with costs to handle the transaction, please wire $4,000 in US Dollars to me and organize your future payments.
In other other words, don't believe everything you hear or read.

Worked out well for them. Maybe why moneymen are gun shy. Free agency without any contracts. Hopefully this will eventually slow down the insanity, provoke changes. Maybe the Daddy Warbucks of college football will stop throwing money at unproven 18 year olds but I’m not holding my breath.

If true, I'd love to see how the contract is setup. $800K per year - guaranteed for 4 years? Is it basically locking him into UGA for a full scholarship period? Early departure for NFL impact?
Is it performance based in any way? If he doesn't start, does it change? That would hurt the NIL aspect, but the NIL value for a starter is different than it is for a kid that isn't starting.
If he transfers, is any of the sign on to be returned? What if he gets injured?
The basics behind all of this exists at the NFL level, so I'd assume the framework exists for the contracts, but are they using this as the outline?

Especially since you can transfer without any penalty.

If this is about Damon Wilson, that’s interesting. When Keeley committed to Alabama over Ohio, they sounded confident it meant Wilson would commit to Ohio. But you can never count out the UGA payroll

Just a few years ago I posted that it would be outside sources that had the possibility of affecting Clemson’s ability to remain an Elite Program year after year. I indicated that if NIL went into affect it would have an huge impact our recruiting. Before NIL and big money Clemson’s unique culture and Dabo could lured many talented players to Clemson. Now they are looking for the money. Education and learning life skills were important to athletes and parents. Now college athletes may be able to support their families. Mom and Dad can retire much earlier.
Are we becoming an even more Greedy Society??
We did not do these kids any favors with all the changes in college football. We may have seen the best of Clemson Football. Because of all the money being thrown at these players I believe will create and environment of who can pay me the most. This could possibly trickle down to youth sports. Some HS are trying out NIL programs in their states.
Really sad for the future of college athletics!

I think this is a short term thing. No school or group of boosters will be able to keep the level of spending that they are. Especially after a couple of busts where the player simply wasn't as good as advertised. To me it is what happens then that will determine what happens to college football. Ask the A&M boosters. Nobody wants to invest with that much risk. A&M was a reminder of that.

Thanks for the post. It’s a sad day when a school can basically buy a player. I know about money used in recruiting in the 70’s and 80’s but this is just crazy. Schools will be able to buy NC’s unless your HC is Jimbo Fisher, or a few other HCing jerks out there that could not win a NC even spending millions of recruiting like A&M.

Point, OSU or UGA.
OSU because they've been paying players since the dawn of football and can't outbid the rest or UGA that they are unapologetically buying talent to an absurd degree.
I think I'll go with UGAY.

I thought it would be impossible to outbid OSU. It actually impresses me they drew a line and walked away from a player who got more from somewhere else.
Ohio State has the alumni and boosters to match ANY college football program if they want to. Unless I'm missing something, they should have far more resources than any SEC school.
They have ~double the number of students as UGA and the average income of their top graduates has to far exceed that of UGA.

and the courts caved and gave it to them.
I'm more and more opting out with my wallet. Family tickets go unused far more than they once did and the day will come when they go back to IPTAY altogether. Same with the tailgating spots.
Because it's all gotten out of hand and we're a little tired of getting poorer while the rich get richer.
Fact is, Tnet's about my last remaining point of entry into the college football world.
And I wont even pay for that. LOL.

Don't believe everything you read on the internet.
Dave Biddle has been lambasting the guy who misquoted him and posted a link to the radio show. https://post.futurimedia.com/wbns/playlist/31/listen-7500.html?cb=1670937116.862904
What he said is that an unnamed school could assure an unnamed 5-star recruit that he could get a $750,000 total NIL package for three years, if he played there. Biddle added that the recruit didn't necessarily require that Ohio State to guarantee him the same, because he wants to attend OSU. It sounds, more than anything else, that OSU needs to square away their NIL program so that they can give players a basic idea of what their exposure is worth in NIL terms.
Georgia was never mentioned. $1.8 million was never mentioned. The recruit's name was never mentioned.

Sign a kid to that kind of NIL and he most likely will be a bust. I believe you got to be a little hungry to be your best. That young man will end up in the Athens city jail with the other players

At some point these NIL deals may dry up. Even the most wealthy boosters will become wary of giving $1.5M to every kid that flashes his 4 or 5-star endorsement. There are many busts and many players who will screw you over (see Ewers) with transfer portal
