When I think about all of the details that you need to master to not just be proficient, but great at a job…. I think about the difference in my performance/production in my first year of my career vs me now in approximately my 15th year. This also makes me think of the difference in OL coaching with Thomas Austin (beginning of career) vs Matt Luke (high performance veteran). I think about how much better Luke will be in the details that make a great OL coach: recruiting, fundamentals, time management, how to get the message across to your players/coaching ability, etc.
All this to say, I am very much looking forward to the future of our offense with him running the OL!
GO TIGERS!!!

Dabo's worst hire by far. OL coach cannot be a place to miss. Now corrected.....

I just was thinking about all of the small things I do differently now in my own job, that have pretty much become habits. Compare this to when I first started and had no clue what I was doing, trying my best to learn on the fly. When someone is put into a position and has NO experience, they have to spend as much time learning as they do producing. It takes a while to find/create your own system that not only works for you, but produces great results. It’s the case for any job, in any field.

I hate it for Thomas as I believe he is a great guy and will eventually be a great coach. The difference between the type of recruits Luke is attracting and those attracted by Austin is stark. I know Dabo thought Thomas was ready, but it is clear that was a miscalculation. I am glad to have Matt on board but hope Thomas grows from the experience.

Dabo is not alone in miscalculating on a coach from time to time. However, you cannot argue his ability to find good assistants, as evidenced by the most successful run in Clemson history. Overall he’s had fantastic longevity and success in the guys he’s picked. That’s all you can ask. No coach bats 1.000.

Without a doubt Dabo is right much more often than he is wrong. Its not popular on this board but discussing his hits and misses, as long as its in the proper context, is not a bad thing.

do not blame Austin one bit for accepting a job he probably wasnt ready for , it really was one of the biggest head scratchers in the Dabo era as to why it even occurred. Clemson was the hottest brand in college football at the time , had their choice of 99.4 % of all coaches in U.S., it was almost as if Clemson was working with a budget equivalent to Furman

You don’t put a rookie to do “on job training” with a national powerhouse program. Go to SoCon or something similar and get your experience.

so it's really difficult - and just a projection - to judge their performances against each other while at Clemson.

Sounds like this proves the case that getting rid of the " Friends and Family Plan " when it comes to coaching hires is the correct decision. Now, if we can apply that to the roster, we will be making progress.

Experience and track record matters. It's really that simple.

Austin was hard working in every way but experience matters….
The reality though is that the biggest issue was negative recruiting by other top schools…
Dabo nullified that angle with the Luke hire and it will pay dividends as we pursue top OL recruits…

It makes you wonder why Dabo didn't hire someone like Luke to begin with.***

Its obvious why...Dabo wanted to be this "coaching clinic" of sorts to where any coach under him could use that a reference tool when applying for head coaching gigs...The same reputation and persona that Saban has created....Unfortunately, Dabo doesnt possess that sort of pedigree. I love the dude!
