Davis is 340, Trotter is 285...clear mismatch.

Trotter's going to get pushed arond to the point where I wouldnt be surprised if he gets rattled and has bad snaps.
RB will be needed to chip Davis the entire time, making our playbook vanilla.
I know you don't want freshmen and sophomores playing center, but we need athleticism in the interior.
No reason for us not to be higblighting this matchup. UGA certainly is.

I’m not sure though we are sending the wrong guy out there to be the center of our O’line. Part of the problem last year, as I have read, was speed and agility on the line.

Correct.
6’2” 285 lbs vs 6’6” 340 lbs
I know that doesn’t tell the whole story but it is at least a zero order consideration. The interior OL will have its work cut out for it against UGA in general. That specific matchup is the one that could concerns me the most. Hopefully Trotter comes out and holds his own.

I don't claim to know how UGA used Davis or what his health was last year, but the stats are pedestrian. According to a UGA bio, he registered 1 sack for 3 yards last year in 7 games. Over his three year career, he's registered 7 TFL for 36 yards, including 1 sack for 3 yards.
This may be incomplete info, he may have been hurt, or maybe his job is just to occupy blockers so others can get to the QB.
If anyone has better information, I'd welcome it. Regardless, I agree that his size alone will pose a problem.

I don't know about that. Seems to be motoring pretty good for a big guy on this one. I mean how often does a 340 lb Nose get in on a tackle at the sideline? Pretty rare IMO.

Thank you for pointing out the high level of resiliency in the Dawgs. They were in a tough slog, but were able to pull victory out of the jaws of defeat with hustle plays like the one shown above.

That’s weird. According to the rules of SEC speed, strength and sheer fact of SEC membership, they should have destroyed that lesser foe. Or maybe that’s just a narrative.

And at the end of the day, a bowl game loss for UGA in the 2018 season and even a Clemson loss 8 months ago doesn't really tell us much about Jordan Davis' mobility.
Cheers anyway. I hope watching Jordan Davis vs. Mason Trotter is as fun for you as it will be for me. ??

Not too much other than history tends to repeat itself. Your salivation over a paper matchup highlights the perception of your fanbase, delusional. Do something, pup. Then bark or gaslight, you seem to be a real wiz at that.
I didn’t mean to hurt your feewings though. You dogs are sensitive, but it’s a matter of insecurity for obvious reasons so while we are laughing at you I’m sure there is some Moran that feels sorry for you.

Well first off he’s fat…and by design..he’s a run stopper between the Guards…The idea should be to spread them out often to force those LBs in coverage in which they are not very good in…Adam Anderson and Nolan Smith could be a problem…don’t forget they have an old @$& defense. 7 of their 11 starters are SRs or higher.

As Cotton Scout Tiger said, UGA asks their DL to play a little differently than Clemson does schematically speaking. Clemson is a majority 1 gap team up front, so you'll see the DL be able to be more aggressive while still keeping gap integrity. This allows for the DL to rack up more sacks and TFLs. UGA asks their front to play more 2 gap. So, the individual lineman's job is to control the OL in front of him and defend the gaps on either side. Because the role is to control the LOS more than aggressively get upfield, a d-line with 2 gap responsibility doesn't show up in the box score as much as their 1 gap brethren. This article explains it more in depth if you're interested.
https://www.xsosfootball.com/one-gap-and-two-gap-techniques/In this X’s and O’s Football breakdown, we thought we would explain what the differences is between one gap and two gap technique are in football.

I remember Tommy Sharpe kicking Langston Moore's ### all up and down the field...
So hopefully Mason Trotter has some of that in him. Strength and technique go a long way toward nullifying difference in size.

Trotter currently has better Technique and quicker feet than Rayburn. Trotter can also get to the 2nd level (he did it last fall often), which I have yet to see Rayburn do.

Exactly. I would much rather see Rayburn on the field vs. the Dawgs. Trotter at center doesn't give me a lot of confidence for this game.

Coming up quick from center and getting leverage is an equalizer too….
Guillermo was sub 300 pounds as well and things turned ok in 2016….

This is an important point. Jordan Davis is massive. Trotter will not be able to move him. He might be a good center, but this is a total mismatch.
If Rayburn isn’t ready to start, then Bockhorst needs to move to center so that Tchio can start at LG.

Regarding snapping the ball, technique, etc will be quickly rendered irrelevant once he starts getting dominated by a NT who is 55 lbs heavier and taller.
You just don't want a center getting owned like that...He will get the yips and start making bad snaps. You see this at every level, even the NFL.
Not to mention how it completely takes away any option of releasing the RB out of the backfield on pass plays.

I’ve already had doubts at our ability to run the football against UGA. Mainly because we struggle running against elite defenses. Bockhorst and Putnam aren’t the biggest OG’s. Trotter is tiny. Hard for me to see how we get a push up front.

Bockhorst might be the worst on the line. You don’t block a human being Davis’s size with only one man anyways. When we had Big Dex it was rare he got a one on one matchup.

One of the top centers in the NFL is only 298lbs. He was first team All-Pro with the Packers. Corey Linsley is his name. He is with the Broncos now. Maybe Trotter is the real deal?

Dabo is going to play the right Guy, he said yesterday that Mason had maxed out on his weight & strength for his body type & he would never probably be over 285 but he was super strong, he was proud of him & he felt he could help them this year.

September Football Good People
Aug 8, 2021, 4:14 AM
|
|
Please remember it will be September in the Carolinas when this game will be played. Not a brisk 55 degree November night. The Tigers are also subject to use a good bit of tempo. Georgia I think has started playing with tempo some; but it's not a staple of what they do. So, will the Ga. DL be use to it in that heat? Could the plan be to just roll Rayburn and Trotter throughout the game at Davis as well as the tempo to wear him (them) out? Who is his backup? Can Davis play every down?
340 lbs. is a lot of weight to carry in that heat. And, unless it is not a tightly contested game like everyone thinks; I do not see a man that large playing all game long at such a level that he impacts the game "all game long"! Do you? As a Tigers fan; I guess I just hope not! We'll see in less than a month!

It's still early!
As someone else said, at center if you can get leverage "quicker" than the bigger player opposite you - "you can do some things"! Remember as well as the other things mentioned: we aren't running the power I or Nebraska I stuff! Quick hitting stuff!
Brockhorst may have the job "just for Georgia"! In a strange twist! Just running at them probably is not going to be the game plan! Rayburn has to prove it in a game and I think he'll get his chance early. In short, I think they may split time to see who performs better! Both are quality men. And quality players from what I can tell. It will come down to effectiveness "in the game"!

Mason Trotter is 6'2 280 lbs., and that may be generous. If he starts vs UGA we're essentially telling them we're not even going to attempt to run the ball.

Georgia Southern vs. Florida
Aug 8, 2021, 6:17 PM
|
|
Georgia Southern went to the swamp with an undersized OL and I believe only threw the football twice in a defeat of the Florida Gators a few years ago.
The point of bringing that up is: "a vaunted SEC defense got beaten by a smaller OL"!
How does Navy rush the ball against bigger DL consistently? How did Georgia Tech beat Georgia a few years ago in Athens when old Paul was there with maybe one OL over 300 lbs.?
Unless they have outlawed cut blocking to the point all you can run is - straight at a defender - leverage is always going to be a part of the trenches. Low man wins is a saying for a reason! Plus as someone else has pointed out - unless the Georgia DL in question has done some serious work this off season nothing says he is a game changer like that. Could be as it was said earlier he has been playing hurt or sparingly(why) or something. But, his stats do not point to you having to be overly worried about him.

So, you're advocating for Clemson to run the triple option? Unless that's your point, I don't think the examples you've highlighted are exactly relevant.
Also, read this article to learn a little more about defensive line play and why one would expect Jordan Davis' contribution to the team to not be reflected directly in the box score.

The point of bringing up Georgia Southern "going to the Swamp and beating up on a VAUNTED SEC defense was, there is more than just being big that leads to having success on the football field"! Look at the size difference there. Is there something that says; "one must cut block only in the triple option"?

You're forgetting who was the HC @ UF at the time.. Just sayin'....

To some people it doesn't matter: Sec Sec Sec. Plus, one team is small and the other has a size advantage. Throw in they were at home and it should never have even been close with the logic some people have! Just saying!
