Let's assume that we didn't have such significant injuries
Feb 19, 2020, 11:13 AM
|
|
this year. Meaning:
-Jonathan Baehre, a stretch big man many expected to be a starter this year, didn't tear his ACL and miss the whole season.
-Clyde Trapp, our starting guard, didn't miss half of the season with an ACL tear.
-Chase Hunter, a talented 4 star freshman who started some at the beginning of the year and would surely have been in our regular rotation, didn't miss all but a few games this year with injury.
-Alex Hemenway, a talented 3 star freshman who has impressed us these last few games with his shooting ability, didn't miss half of the season with a high ankle sprain.
I believe this team would be in the NCAA Tournament this year.
I realize that injuries happen for everyone, but you can't ignore the significance of our injuries this year. Our turnaround is due to Trapp and Hemenway being healthy, meaning that they can practice and our team can build continuity. Not having enough scholarship players to go 5 on 5 in practice is a big deal. That hurt us a lot during the first half of the season.
I am excited for the rest of this season, as well as next year.

Its hard to say. We didnt start off well early when we played better teams. Injuries were a factor but its hard to say. What is going on w Hunter? You hear he's hurt but no specifics. Will he be back this year? Will he / can he ask for a medical?

I'd say three or four more wins. Definitely a W instead of an L vs. Notre Dame.

With 3 more wins, we are 16-9 overall instead of 13-12.

If those 3 wins were ACC games, we would be 10-5 instead of 7-8 in ACC play, and in sole possession of fourth place right now.
Big difference!

The injuries are certainly disappointing. My question - what is behind all of the injuries .. and not just us - seems to be very prevalent in college basketball ?? Any thoughts ?

We lost to UNC because Cole Anthony was playing.
I'll admit we've had significant injuries but Trapp an Hemenway are the only known contributors as they've actually played. We can speculate on what the others may or may not have done but there's no basis for comparison.
I'm more curious about how much of the team stays on for next season given that's typically been an issue for us from year to year.

The Miami game was our turning point. That was the first game all season that I thought we played with chemistry as a team. I don’t think it was a coincidence that the Miami game was the first game that Trapp started.
It still annoys me that 5’4” Likes drove on Dawes and Simms and made the circus layup to tie the game with less than a minute left. What a ridiculous shot that was.

Link. The layup is at about the 1:20 mark.

Agree with OP and Mountaineer about Miami being the turning point. With the help of having Trapp back as a starter. Would have to think with a fully healthy and in season playing form Trapp they would have beat Miami. I think the injury of Trapp alone is probably the difference between in or out of the NCAA tournament for this team. That along with no Simms flu against ND.

right now in the season.
Obviously, other teams can say the same thing about injuries, but I doubt most teams have had the significant injuries we've had this year. The injuries were even harder for us to overcome given the new faces we have this year, as well as the fact that we lost almost 90% of our production from last year's team.

Now imagine if along with Grantham, Mark Donnall, David Skara, and Clyde Trapp all missed significant time too.
Doubt we would have been a sweet 16 team....

After the way things started in conference, I thought this team would be fortunate to win 2 or 3 games in conference play. Injuries were a factor. It takes a while building chemistry when your playing freshmen at the point. Dawes play of late is starting to show understanding of CBB's system, Hemenway is providing a spark from the arc, Jemison is showing good signs of development, Trapp is looking faster and more confident, Simms is playing with his back to the basket more instead of living at the 3 point line, Mack is driving the basketball better of late. I am hoping to stay on the good side of .500. If the team can keep this run going and sneak in to the NCAA fine, but an NIT berth may serve just as well for continued development of this team.

I think....

that even just having Trapp, Hemenway and Hunter healthy at the same time would have been a big deal. I appreciate C. Scott's efforts, and it turns out we needed him to play with all the injuries....but we were really hurting at the guard position for a while. Dawes was also having to carry too much of a load...he has figured it out now with playing less minutes. At this point...I don't really include Baehre in the "what-ifs"....I kind of wonder if his whole career here will be a "what if".
I'm still not sure if we would be "in" the NCAA tournament...but would definitely be in bubble territory. We were still very young at the beginning of the year and would have had some growing pains. But losses to Yale, Miami, SCAR and Va. Tech at home before the calendar turned might not have happened.

It's really a shame that Javan White decided to transfer. He could've helped us a ton this year.

Looking at the remaining Shed-yule, the "hardest" game is FSU, and its at Home. So my beseech that we can win out rest of year is not fool hardy. I predict UVa will lose three more regular season games, we win out, thus the 4th place finish in the Regular Season and the double bye in the ACCT ... so three games there and that's it, off to the Dance !

Since whatever season we are in determines the complete state of the program, I can't wait for next year!
Next year we are going to have a successful season and make the tournament. And when you clowns come on here to complain after every win I am just going to respond, "this is where we are in year 11"

However, looking at patterns...I would predict another tough year with the following problems:
- Too many injuries - Maybe a key player or two transfer out - and the ever-popular “we just don’t make shots”

I think injuries hurt but the biggest loss was the guard who started during world games. I believe his name is Honor but not positive. I watched film on over seas games and he is unreal with the ball in his hands. He was denied ability to play without sitting out this year after transferring.
