How to contain Winston and make him throw.

Looking for an intelligent conversation about this. I'm no football coach. I know nothing about coordinating a defense however I have an idea, for what it's worth.
Pull Vic Beasley back to the OLB position for the ENTIRE game as a spy for Crab Boy. Tell Vic to pay no attention to anything else except making sure crabby stays behind line of scrimmage. Lawson and Barnes are healthy options to replace him there at DE.
Will this work? Are teams so spread out now that Defenses can't afford to make someone a spy all game? I'd appreciate someone who can tell me what they think.

Maybe in a 3-4 but Vic probably can't cover the pass...

in a 4-3 or nickel package. it you just had Vic standup in a 4-3 and spy, then maybe, but he'll have all day to throw it.
Seems best to spy with Anthony or the SAM if anyone. I think our LBs are good, so I see leave Vic where he is and bring the heat.

You can't give him that many 1:1 options and be so predictable because he's such a good thrower, and our pass rush would suffer.
The way you slow him down is the same way we slowed down $cam Newton. You stay in your rushing lanes and collapse the pocket on him so that if he scrambles he has to run 10 yards sideways first to do it. We just have to be disciplined in our rushes.

An offense like Fla states would exploit that with a swing pass or something of that nature. We're better have having Vic pin his ears back and attack Anus on almost every play.

You're probably right about the swing passes

But I disagree Stephone has the athleticism and strength to bring Crabby down in a one on one tackle situation. I, however, do NOT, have that feeling when it comes to Vic. I think he'd throw him down by his jersey then pick him up by it. lol

The Big play
Sep 11, 2014, 4:35 PM
|

IMO.. the key for Clemson, don't give up the BIG PLAY. Listen, FLA STATE "IS" going to score...get ready for that. The Key is to not let them have 50,60,70 yd plays-etc. I would like to see how patient Winston and the Noles will be if they had to drive for 12,14,16 play drives. Make them earn what they get! If anyone thinks this is going be a 13 to 10 type game; Get real.

I think the winning drive in the NCG last season showed he has patience. But I agree fully on the Big play. Clean tackles, keep everything in front of you.

If our defense has to defend 12 play drives all night, it's gonna be UGA all over again. Defense will huff and puff in the 4th. If we can have our share of 8-12 play drives we have a chance to wear them down. I like our front 7 depth over their depth.

the best way to contain Winston is in an 8x9 cell. Otherwise, our Dline is going to have to play lights out against them. I think we have the serious depth on D to make this a game if we can move the ball ourselves.

Vic's value is as disrupter, not guard dog...

His greatest value is to create havoc in the backfield. Moving him back only reduces potential pressure, allowing FSU to key on the other ends. It might prevent Crabby from long runs, but his arm will have more time ... which is far more dangerous.
Let Vic be Vic, and bring heat in zone blitz packages. We'll get burned at times, just don't give up the chunk plays deep. Crabby doesn't have Richard Kiel as a receiver to bail him out this time around, and I'm willing to bet he gets flustered if we can keep pressure on.

Not sure if you watched the Ohio State game but I think our front seven can handle an athletic QB as is.
In all seriousness, it will start with stopping the run. If Clemson can force him to pass it, they will be successful at bringing him to the ground.

I think it is simple. You play man under 2 deep and have the man cover guys be very aggressive at the LOS to disrupt timing. With I play a 3 man line with 2 LB and assign 1 of the 4 (not the dt) spy duty. Mix up who spies. From this alignment we can also bring a db off the slot and either rotate to man free or run a zone blitz scheme. I think this is best to stop pass. If they go heavy run we obviously would have to adjust personnel but I would play same scheme ( ie sub another dt for dime db if they use less than 4 wr).

So Winston runs like a drunken Johnny Football into the endzone against OSU and now he is a dual-threat?

FSU has too much talent to dedicate a spy to crab boy. Consistent pressure is the best way to mess up Winston. Under pressure, he either flushes and takes off or makes a bad throw. I do not think Winston is as good as the rest of the talent he plays with makes him look.

^^This
Gotta pressure and hurry crab legs. Given time he will find the open receiver. His run threat is overrated. Bring the heat.
