How the bowl games WILL be fixed.

Just had this epiphany. It's so simple I can't believe I haven't thought of this before. The bowl games will be fixed when ESPN decides to quit paying millions of bucks to televise these games. We have all these minor games because they are cheap programming for ESPN. They don't need ticket sales. How many people are in the stands in the Bahamas, Hawaii, Myrtle Beach, and all those other pre-Christmas bowls? Now, when ESPN decides that with the playoffs it is stupid to pay those "big games" the "big money" to televise those games, they will die. But, as long as ESPN can sell advertising for those formerly big bowl games, then we will keep having them. And, we'll keep having opt outs. Regardless of how realignment and NIL and the portal shakes out, a December game will still be meaningless for seniors and guys leaving for the NFL.

As I stated earlier, college football is now controlled by the TV services. That is where the money comes from and money controls college football. The season is short and it is popular. If college basketball and baseball was only 12 games and was more popular it would be controlled by tv.

I posted this elsewhere but IF those bowl games survive, it could be for the 2nd tier of schools that aren't part of the Big 2 (3 or 4) conferences and they will, in essence become the football version of the NIT tournament. The G5 schools and Vanderbilts, Wake Forests etc. have enough of a fan base that could keep them viable. I would watch them if they were presented as part of a tournament but not just for funsies.

Yeah. That’s not going to happen. Why? People watch football. Period.
The bowls won’t ever be fixed without major rule changes. They need to withhold NIL $ until after graduation. Opt outs should lose all NIL money and be returned to the general scholarship fund for each school. Transfers should also lose all NIL dollars accrued at their former school as well. Put a cap on NIL dollars as well. It’s disgusting that Brock Purdy makes less than most college QB’s.
We need major legislation to reel this mess back in. Players wouldn’t opt out if it cost them money.

I for one besides our game have watched no more than 2 quarters of any of these games. Not the same teams that were playing in the regular season. What was once a reward for the team has now become a scrimmage to see where one will be on the depth chart come Spring.

We do not want more government. College football would likely be paused while each side try to get ‘more pork’ in the legislation.
Jk….but I’m going to keep watching with beer and chips/salsa. 😏

I had read an article on the Outback Bowl and them pulling their sponsorship a few years back. Reasons given in the article were basically stating the watered down product. Penn State a few years back was mentioned as the offender that broke the camel’s back. Apparently they had a lot of players opting out and Outback no longer want to be associated with what this has become. Whether true or not it makes a lot of sense.

Bret - you cited the cause. I didnt see you propose a fix.

We all know (or should) the economics of bowls/holiday programming. Even if viewership is down this year overall (I know some have mentioned but I haven’t seen the numbers/sources - so most likely it is up) - the economics still work.
Are you suggesting a boycott of ALL bowl games next year?

I've always wondered how those minor bowl games make money

with near empty stadiums and very few eyeballs on tv.
I can't imagine the sponsors get much value for their money in them. That's where the lack of value will start, imo.

To add. How about reduce the number of bowls and increase the minimum wins to 7? ESECPN needs those easy miney bowls so they can dish out that 100 mill to all the SEC schools including the doormats that bring no value to the conference except easy winsvlike Usuck, vandy, and Arky.

Why do people think the minor bowl games need fixing? Seems like people not interested in watching would simply not watch.

Because college football fans feel entitled. They “deserve” to be entertained in all forty three games.
They ##### about the games but feel compelled to watch.

They had that exact discussion on game day. Herbie said just cancel the bowls because they are just exhibitions now. You’re all over it!
