South Carolina Highway 150 is a 33.58 mile state highway starting on the southwest end at SC 56 in Glenn Springs, crossing US 176 in Pacolet, US 29 and I-85 in Gaffney, and continuing to the northeast end at the North Carolina line, becoming NC 150.
Having covered most of the SC colleges west and north of Cootlumbia, we visit Newberry, a private Lutheran college in Newberry, SC. It was founded by the Reverend John Bachman, a Charleston minister, in 1856, barely survived the Civil War, moved to Walhalla in 1868 and back to Newberry in 1877. Women were accepted in 1897 and desegregation took place in the 1960s. Newberry has about 1500 students on a 90 acre campus in 44 areas of study including a long history with the music program in vocal, instrumental, and jazz performance. The athletic teams, the Wolves, compete in Division II in the South Atlantic Conference. Notable alumni include MMA fighter Corey Anderson, politician Lee Atwater, and SC Secretary of State Mark Hammond.

150 - Da'Quan Bowers was Credited with 150 Tackles for Clemson

DL Da’Quan Bowers (2008-2010) came to Clemson highly rated to say the least. He was ranked as high as the #1 recruit in the nation according to some recruiting services. By the time he reached his junior season, his play was as good as advertised.
While at Clemson:
His first two seasons at Clemson were very good. So good that many college DL would have been satisfied with such strong performance. His first two seasons according to Sports-Reference.com:
2008: - 37 Tackles (21 Solo, 16 Assisted) - 8.0 Tackles for Loss
2009: - 46 Tackles (27 Solo, 19 Assisted) - 10.5 Tackles for Loss
https://www.sports-reference.com/cfb/players/daquan-bowers-1.html
Apparently, Da’Quan Bowers was not at all satisfied with those stats. Determined to play to his full potential, Bowers became a monster in his third season. Also according to Sports-Reference.com:
2010: - 67 Tackles (41 Solo, 26 Assisted) - 26.0 Tackles for Loss - 1 Interception
Clemson Career (2008-2010): - 150 Tackles (89 Solo, 61 Assisted) - 44.5 Tackles for Loss - 1 Interception
https://www.sports-reference.com/cfb/players/daquan-bowers-1.html
According to SBNation, two things motivated Bowers to push himself to achieve his full potential that third season:
Two things set Da'Quan Bowers up for this outstanding season, neither of which should've happened.
“First, just following the bowl victory over Kentucky, he lost his friend Gaines Adams. Gaines was thought to be a healthy young man, having just finished a season with the Chicago Bears after being drafted fourth by Tampa Bay in 2007. Gaines always had problems putting on weight at Clemson, and no one caught on that he had an enlarged heart, which ultimately caused his death.
Gaines had told Da'Quan that it was time for him to live up to his hype after coming into Clemson as the No. 1 recruit in the nation. Da'Quan had only four sacks in his first two seasons, and a relatively poor work ethic. … The second was the premature loss of his Dad. Dennis Bowers was a gospel singer and Da'Quan joined his gospel group as a guitarist during semester breaks and weekends in Bamberg SC. Before a show in Augusta, GA, just as Clemson was opening fall practice in August, Dennis reportedly collapsed from a heart attack. We had heard he was stable and that Da'Quan was being released from practice to see his father for the weekend. He made it to his father's bedside and they talked all night, but the next morning he passed.”
https://www.sbnation.com/2011/4/4/2332732/2011-nfl-draft-de-daquan-bowers-clemson
There are no words to express such loss. Very, very sad for sure.
Bowers now had to move forward while dealing with tragedy! This is no easy way to deal with such things. Bowers apparently pushed himself to excel. According to ClemsonTigers.com:
“Bowers’ decorated college career at Clemson from 2008-10 culminated in him earning unanimous All-America honors as a junior in 2010. That year, the former No. 1 overall recruit in the country earned the Bronko Nagurski Trophy as college football’s top defensive player, the Ted Hendricks Award as the nation’s top defensive end and the ACC’s Defensive Player of the Year award.”
https://clemsontigers.com/coaches/daquan-bowers/
On3.com noted additional accolades for Bowers, particularly after that monster 2012 season:
“He earned All-American honors in 2010 after posting 67 tackles and 26 tackles for loss. He led the nation in sacks that year with 15.5.
Bowers also won the Bronko Nagurski Trophy as college football’s top defensive player in 2010, as well as the Ted Hendricks Award as the nation’s top defensive end.”
https://www.on3.com/college/clemson-tigers/news/clemson-tigers-football-staff-dabo-swinney-support-daquan-bowers-analyst/
TheACC.com also acknowledged Bowers’ amazing season:
Clemson defensive end Da'Quan Bowers has been named the recipient of the 2010 Ted Hendricks Award. The honor is presented each year to the top defensive end in college football. It is named after former Miami (FL) All-American Ted Hendricks, who went into a stellar NFL career as well.
Bowers is the first Clemson player to win the Ted Hendricks Award. Earlier this week, Bowers won the Bronko Nagurski Award, which is presented to the top defensive player in college football by the Football Writers Association and the Charlotte Touchdown Club. Bowers is the first Clemson football player in history to win two major position awards in the same year.
"Da'Quan Bowers is an excellent choice for this year's winner," said Hendricks " I like the way he plays the run because he really manhandles his opponents. This is an individual who possesses sheer natural talent. In the past, some have questioned his pass-rush abilities, but he's the nation's sack leader this year! Any more questions? Da'Quan clearly impressed our selection committee members, and i think they have made another fine choice."
https://theacc.com/news/2010/12/9/51d0c33fa0ee267cf05f70f1_131481040626092205.aspx
Somehow, I have to believe that both his dad and his friend (Gaines Adams) were looking down with a lot of pride.
After Clemson:
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers selected Bowers in the 2nd Round of the 2011 NFL Draft. He was selected with the 51st pick. According to ClemsonTigers.com:
“Bowers was selected by Tampa Bay in the second round of the 2011 NFL Draft. He played five seasons in Tampa and played the 2017 CFL season for the Edmonton Eskimos. In 2018, he entered the coaching ranks as a volunteer student assistant while completing his Clemson degree in parks, recreation and tourism management. … Da’Quan Bowers is in his first season as a full-time staff member at Clemson, returning to his alma mater in January 2023 in a defensive player development role after spending the previous three seasons as South Florida’s defensive line coach.”
https://clemsontigers.com/coaches/daquan-bowers/
Bowers played five seasons with Tampa. According to Pro-Football-Reference, he registered the following NFL statistics:
2011-2015: - 69 Tackles (46 Solo, 23 Assisted) - 18 Tackles for Loss - 2 Fumble Recoveries
After his NFL playing days, Bowers has dedicated his career to helping the next generation develop. Bowers has spent time on the staff at Clemson, then USF, then back to Clemson. On3.com reported the following in February 2023:
“Dabo Swinney announced on Wednesday that Da’Quan Bowers is back on Clemson’s staff. Bowers will work in defensive player development for the Tigers after spending the past three years at USF.
Bowers coached as an assistant at USF with former Bulls head coach Jeff Scott, who also left Clemson to go to USF after the 2019 season. Bowers served as the defensive line coach for the Bulls.
He previously worked alongside Todd Bates as a grad assistant with the Tigers in 2018 and 2019.”
