That's a good one. I like True Grit, both with Wayne and Bridges. Pale Rider is a good one with Eastwood.
I always liked Young Guns, has some great scenes. "Did you see the size of that chicken, that cock-a-doodle-doo?" Has been a favorite for yrs.

Pale Rider is good but have you ever compared it to "Shane" with Alan Ladd. Very similar storyline just replace a little boy yelling "Shane! Come back Shane!" with a girl yelling "Preacher!"

Josey Wales knows all about a Missouri boat ride and getting out stains, and he knew why the Indian girl knew the other Indian that dressed up like Abraham Lincoln was a Chief. And if you don't believe that, you'll probably get beat with a knotted plow line!!!

That year saw DeNiro as Max Cady (Cape Fear), Nicholson as Col Nathan Jessup (A Few Good Men) and Hackman as Little Bill Daggett nominated for best supporting actor. Hackman beat out what I consider the toughest competition to date.

Lonesome Dove may well be. Not entirely fair to lump w others as it was a mini series but it had everything in it that a western requires and each element was flawlessly presented. I've not yet read the book, but it's on the list.

Wayne's only Oscar nomination came as Rooster Cogburn in True Grit. It's a great injustice he was overlooked for this performance.

Faithful to the epic novel by Larry McMurtry and wonderfully cast.
Pretty much perfect in every way.
Regarding stand alone theatrical releases, I’d go with “The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance” if I had to choose.
Also, “The Searchers”, “Shane”, “Unforgiven” …

I have not seen this movie since I was about 10,which was about the age of the kid in the movie. I do not remember it well but it brought tears to my 10 year old eyes and I am sure it would now as well if I were to watch it again.

All with Clint Eastwood as far as greatest. I used to love westerns as a kid though, even with John Wayne or even Jimmy Stewart.

Meant to mention Magnificent 7, both new and old. The cast from the old one was great with Yul Brynner, Charles Bronson, too cool Steve McQueen, James Coburn, and several others.
Bronson had a few good other ones too. Yul Brynner's deep voice was his signature.

My favorite western is "High Noon". Gary Cooper, Grace Kelly, and Lloyd Bridges in one movie - Gotta' be good! Cooper won the academy award for best actor that year - 1952. The movie song "Do not forsake me, oh my darling" sung by Tex Ritter won the academy award for best song.
