Dwindling basketball attendance under Brad Brownell...

We hear so often that fan support is an issue for Clemson basketball but if you look at the FACTS you will see that fan support (Average Attendance / Season) HAS been there before. These look like numbers of a fanbase that is now bored of settling for average year after year. Just the facts from the NCAA website...
2016 - 8,703 2017 - 7,261 2018 - 7,743 2019 - 7,015 2020 - 6,832 2021 - 6,241 (Through 8 home games)

Wow that is getting low.
In OP last season we averaged over 9k.
Brad doesn't want to do any publicity like a lot of coaches and leaves that up to the school.

We should averaging 8k in a almost 9k seat arena. Anything under 7k is poor.

Any idea where to find annual season ticket sales for basketball? Would be interesting to know too.

season tickets

i don't have the numbers, and i doubt IPTAY would be forthcoming with them,
but...FWIW
when LJ first re-opened, all the lower arena that was available was sold as season tickets
the next couple of years, there were very few lower arena seats available
for this season, there were many lower arena seats available this year that were not sold as season tickets
looking at the section where i have had seats for 4 years now, this is the first year that it didn't sell out in season tickets (although the people who own the seats in front of us never come to the games.. never seen the same people in the seats for two games in a season in 4 years)
so i think it would be fair to assume that season ticket sales are down

Don’t confuse him with maff,, under 7000 in little John has like having under 60,000 in Death Valley. That would get a football coach fired

I'm not here to defend BB, but, isn't attendance down in all college sports across the board? Between unlimited viewing opportunities on TV, Covid, increase in ticket prices and more competition for the entertainment dollar I believe attendance in college sports is down across the board. That's why the majority of stadiums are getting smaller and not larger. I am sure you can find some outliers, but that is exactly what they are, exceptions to the rule.

Could COVID has something to do with that? Seems like the last two years are where we see the biggest decrease.

It has for me. Masks are required at Clemson for basketball games and I have no desire to wear a mask for two hours. I'll watch from my recliner until things change.

Sounds like they don't enforce masks. If that is holding you back, go on to the game. You will not be disappointing.

Masks are required except when you are actively eating. You start out with one of those gallon buckets of popcorn, which you eat one kernel at a time. If you finish that, you start on a bag of M&M's, one M at a time. Hope this helps!

The 2019-20 home attendance was not affected by covid. The number he has listed for 2021 is actually the 2021-22 season to date. The 20-21 number was actually 1,801 average attendances but obviously shouldn't be held against Coach Brownell. But the numbers through the 2019-2020 season show a significant decline that has nothing to do with covid. The 2019-2020 season was one of only two seasons since 1970 to average less than 7000 fans. We averaged an incredible 11,151 fans in 97-98 on a season that was only 18-14 overall and 7-9 in conference. So, contrary to certain arguments, Clemson fans are more than willing to support their team when the coach puts a CONSISTENTLY competitive team on the floor.

Don't get me wrong, attendance is important to show that the fans at least support the team .But no fan has ever made a 3 point basket to win the game at the buzzer, or made a stupid foul putting the opponents best shooter on the line when they are already leading or have any 5 of those fans been the 5 on the court during a 7 minute scoring drought or seeing a 23 point 1st have lead dwindle away to nothing. None of these fans know how to defend an open 3 point shooter or block out underneath the rim for an offensive rebound. Look the team needs the support, but it's hard to get behind a team that has shown little or no improvement in 12 years. Imagine if Dabo was only winning 6 or 7 games a year, or just .500 against the gamecoots, I wonder how long before attendance would drop in Death Valley.

Dabo doesn't go up the same kind of ACC schedule that Clemson does in basketball. Basketball coaches have less time to prepare for games than football.
Clemson also doesn't have a natural advantage in recruiting for basketball like it does in football with the warmer climate and geographical location.

So Brad does worse with the shorter preparation times than those playing him do? Seems like an odd defense.

Comparing the basketball program to the football program is dumb. Basketball has more competitive programs and Clemson being near the NC universities makes it even more challenging.
Clemson has a similar or better record this season in basketball to many programs that have had more success in basketball in past to include UVA which won it all two seasons ago. Why aren't they doing better?
If you aren't happy with Clemson basketball, why don't you watch one of the top programs.

Gee, we had better attendance back in the early 70's. Put Bleachers back on the one side behind the benches and let in the students, first come, first seated. We were always loud. I know IPTAY would not like that, but since they do not seem to attend as much, the heck with them.

It seems like Clemson has rarely lost at home the past few years. Brownell has owned BC. I'm not understanding the complaints about attendance.
BC had a couple of hot shooters especially the Galloway kid. That kid took a really bad shot at the end of the game that most of the time does not go in and Clemson wins.

Before the apologist and blamer gets started. It has nothing to do with a bad building and facilities. It has nothing to do with how much Clemson spends. It has to do with not being exciting basketball. It has to do with not connecting to the fans and students. It has to do with a coach and one supporter being excited with beating low expectations, not winning.

What’s the guesstimate of the the actual fans in the building (vs the attendance figures provided)?

The NCAA may want to recheck 2020-21 figures. We were only allowed about 2,000 in the coliseum last season.

I really feel like if we had better support for the basketball program and CBB, both financially and by going to games...then the attendance issue would resolve itself!!!
