Dabo interview on Fox Sports Radio

Two Pros and a Cup of Joe played an interview with Dabo.

LaVar Arrington and Brady Quinn are the "two pros".

It was interesting because they were both 100% on board with Dabo's assessment of NIL and the portal. Brady Quinn even said that history would look favorably upon Dabo's approach and likened it to building an NFL team through the draft (recruiting and developing high schoolers), rather than free agency (portal).

I highlight this because SO many on these boards have been -- and continue to be -- critical of Dabo's approach. They see Dabo being different, and think that's bad.

I think it's good.

Time will tell, of course. But a couple of those who are more expert than I seem to think he's on the right path.

Portal Kids

All of these kids fall into one of these categories:

- Talent. Weren't good enough to start where they were.
- Money. No loyalty to any team/fan base. Parents usually have a large push in this as well.
- Depth Chart. Usually too many injuries results in falling in depth chart.

If you're competing for championship aspirations, yearly, I can't imagine wanting ANY of these. I CAN absolutely see other teams that aren't great at developing, but have desperate donor bases (Texas, USC, Miami, FSU, etc) loving the portal.

I don't believe Clemson needs transfer portal kids. Dabo needs a QB worth a f***, a few reliable receivers and another phone call from Tyler (before the season starts).

I watched Dabo speak about that on that interview and to be honest I never looked at it that way. I see his point of view. Seems to be more people agreeing with him lately. That being Barrett Sallee, now LaVarr Arrington and Brady Quinn. Maybe the media, and fans for that matter, will start to back off a bit.

Unfortunately, I think you're right about people not seeing the wisdom of what Dabo is doing unless more championships are won. Personally, I think the way Dabo is working it will turn out to be okay, and I think it brings honor to Clemson. I like that he hasn't forsaken the mission of college athletics, and that is to give athletes an opportunity to use their athletic abilities to get an education for success in life. I am really hating that college football is returning to the "80s and 90's where teams like Miami and SMU won because they had the best players money could buy. I hated all of that. I think Dabo is reminding people that you can play at a high level without throwing young players under the bus just for some quick fix player who ultimately won't give a flying flip about Clemson at all. Personally, I'd be okay to sacrifice a championship or two for Clemson to remain true to itself and our traditions of raising up men and women who need no introductions. I never have been comfortable with forsaking integrity for success. My hope this year is that Cade will settle down, our receivers will stay healthy, and the offensive line will be nasty. I want this team to shut up all of the critics and prove once again that you can win big without sacrificing who you are. Go Tigers!

Clemson being the only P5 school to take this approach makes them the test case on the validity of the entire portal argument. Its easy to throw rocks since we've come back to Earth a bit from our heady days a few years back but that would be an overly simplistic way of determining whether Dabos approach is responsible for our regression. Add a stud QB and maybe WR to the last couple teams and they are right in the playoff hunt. The fact we've missed on some guys from a recruiting perspective can be argued to be more responsible for our relative lack of success than anything else, not that the media won't hesitate to lay it all at the feet of a lack of portal activity.

Dabo has not PROVEN that he can field a national title team in the Portal/NIL era of College Football. Teams we used to destroy on a fairly regular basis have closed the gap.........in the last 3 years we've lost to the likes of NCstate TWICE, Duke, South Carolina, Pitt, & Miami. We've had nail biter victories over Wake, Kentucky, Syracuse, South Carolina, Louisville, BC, Georgia Tech.........why???? Because we're not as good as we once were OR as good as our fans believe we are. The talent has fallen off drastically. In the real world, like it or not, the only thing that matters is results. Especially, when there are large amounts of money at stake. You can skin a cat several ways, but it has to be skinned nonetheless. If we have 4 losses or miss the playoffs the next couple of years, the heat will be on. GPAs, grad rates, molding young men and charity work are all great and noble - but pairing that with the results described above will put a coach on the hot seat.

This year will be the final test, in my opinion. If we fail, then the criticism is warranted.

But you oversimplify both the problems, and the solutions. There are myriad reasons why we've regressed and, therefore, a number of necessary solutions.

We recruited all the same 5 stars that everyone in the country wanted (Frank Ladson, DJU, to name just 2). They didn't pan out. We missed. But so did everyone else.

It's not as simple as "just use the portal". The portal creates at least as many problems as it might solve. See: FSU's bowl game and Colorado after game 4.

2024 purple level member flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

For sure....there are definitely more issues than just portal/NIL, but.....

these are huge parts to our issues.

utilizing the portal to "quick fix" issues/busts/transfers is something others use to their advantage and we don't. We lose roughly 10-12 scholarship players to the portal EACH YEAR and replace with high schoolers.........that's 40-50% of a RECRUITING CLASS (assuming a 25 person class) EVERY YEAR......which is less than most, BUT we don't replace with college guys........we replace with high school guys.........that creates "Forever young" issues.

“The talent has fallen off drastically” because of portal use?

Then explain how Dabo’s lack of portal use affects the offense, but not the defense. I think it might be something else.

I mean we recruited DJ, is he better because FSU got him in the portal?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I've thought about that throughout our downfall.....here's my theory.......

1

while NIL and portal are two different things we all know they also go hand in hand also.

Clemson and/or Dabo is not willing to play the "NIL" game to LEAD WITH in recruiting efforts in portal or high school. On average I'd assume that the MAJORITY of NIL$ is spent/focused on the "FLASH" or OFFENSE...........while the Defense demands less as a whole and on average per player. Of course you may have your one-off defensive players that come with a million$ NIL tag, but for the most part QB, WR, RB drive that ship..............which allows defense NIL$ to stay on the lower end or unaffected end of things.........that's why IMO Clemson's Defense has not had a significant swing up or down.

just an opinion, but regardless....Clemson's downfall has come b/c our offensive skill players now aren't in the same stratosphere as our offensive skill players in our 2015-2019 years.

Dabo is a great coach and developer of both players and men who will not win another national championship unless he is able to start using the portal for a few key additions.

He theorized that Dabo knows this but also knows we don’t have the resources to compete with 0310 state, Texas, Oregon…and that’s why he’s following this strategy. He believes in a year or two players will be paid directly by the teams and it we’ll be back to a level playing field.

UGA, BAMA, OH ST, LSU, TX, OKLA and a dozen more SEC, B1G, and BIG 12 have better o-line backups than Clemson has starters. Some enter the portal.

Some smaller schools have talented o-linemen enter the portal. O-linemen are generally not prima donnas. Identify them. Engage them. Recruit NIL transfers. True freshmen o-linemen are often not ready to play.

Duke last year, in addition to running for 200 yds vs. Clemson and averaging 5.8 yds per play, had an o-lineman drafted in this year's 1st round. Has Clemson ever had a 1st round NFL o-line pick?

It’s a nice idea to be a purely developmental program, but it isn’t realistic when players are allowed to transfer without sitting out a year.

The current portal rules make it far easier for players to leave a school, and as a result, the only way for us to replace players we lose to the portal (or to the draft) is to hope that we have a guy already on the roster who can step in. That, or hope that a true freshman can come in and make a difference immediately.

It’s a risky approach since other teams can replace lost talent, or bolster existing talent, via what is essentially free agency. Dabo refusing to utilize that avenue puts the program at significant disadvantage.

It’s no wonder we have underachieved three years in a row.
