Baseball coaching search/the latest

I've wanted to really nail down the specifics of everything I am hearing in regards to the search. I now can say with a lot of confidence - a lot - that Eric Bakich is the leading target at this point. However.....Southern Cal parted ways with Jason Gill a week ago and they are going after Bakich hard. As is FSU (I am not sure what to make of that...we all assume that Link Jarrett would go back home), but I've been told that the 'Noles are also looking at Bakich. We all know that the firing of Mike Martin, Jr., was a preemptive strike in many ways, and they don't wanna be left out in the cold if Jarrett decides to stay in South Bend.
However, I've heard that Neff is looking to get this done this week.

I will admit I have not watched a lot of Michigan baseball but looking at the records... why do we think he would come to Clemson and do better? He had 2 seasons of 40+ and only got past the regional round one time... Is Michigan a harder job than Clemson? What am I missing?

Yea I would say it is. Imagine trying to recruit kids to come play baseball at a school where the field is frozen for the half the year.

So that is it? Recruiting is hard because it is cold? So if a coach does decent up north then southern schools will try to get them because our weather is better? I am not denying it... I mean why else would the ND coach be looking to leave when he is at Omaha but it amazes me that it is that big of an issue.

Uhhhh yes, it is way more difficult to win at Michigan than Clemson in baseball. Every aspect of the job is more challenging...Regional talent pool for recruiting, competition in ACC > Big 10, program tradition, weather, more passionate fan base, more money for assistant coaches, etc...I could go on.
What Bakich has done at Michigan is impressive and I would support the hire. Very interesting news regarding USC. That will probably result in him getting $1 million wherever he ends up.

I watched some Michigan baseball this year. I like his coaching style. Aggressive on the bases, and level swings for line drive base hits. It doesn’t look like the gorilla baseball with tons of strikeouts we’ve been watching. Player development is important, and I think you can make an argument he gets more out of his roster than Monte ever did. If he can recruit the southeast better than Monte then Clemson should do well in the conference.

replace him with, SOMEBODY on here will spout negativism about it. I don't get it. Support the new coach, unless and until he proves that he is unworthy of that support! A lot of that negative sentiment was there with the Monte Lee hiring from Day One. How did that help things?

DavidHood® Do you know if we have reached out to Dan McDonnell of Louisville? I'm looking at when Graham Neff said the baseball job is viewed as a top 15 job, I was thinking along he lines of a more consistent, proven winner. With nothing set in stone yet but if Bakich is the leading candidate and gets the job it'll be interesting to see how he does with the resources he is given. Do you think with him coaching in Maryland and Michigan for the past 10 years how will he be able to adapt to recruit the talent we need to be successful? Thanks

Cali Taxes

It is time to use California state taxes against USC for this coaching hire and NIL. I do not think the football players have caught on. The new coach can live like a king at Clemson dollar per dollar when compared to USC.

Nobody is moving to CA. Everybody's leaving CA. They are all here in SC after fleeing high taxes, high crime, and tyrannical authoritarian politicians in their communist states. Shouldn't be hard to convince Bakich to come to SC instead of CA.

Did you see the house that Riley got as part of the deal? He is still going to pay huge taxes. I don’t see USC giving a baseball coach a house.

Over 20,000 businesses have left California in the last 20 years.

[ in reply to Re: Cali Taxes ] |

Even companies like HP have left California and gone to Texas.
Last year California actually had its population decrease, which would’ve been happening for 20 years if it were not for all of the immigrants from other countries. California’s population of American citizens has been decreasing for decades. More American citizens are leaving California then moving to California every year and that is increasing.
When you factor in cost-of-living plus California state taxes Clemson could offer a baseball coach $500,000 less per year and that coach would still make More money in Clemson.
In fact I saw on YouTube a guy that does real estate say that he could go to Texas and buy a mansion on 5 acres of land and it would be paid for in less than five years just by the property taxes he would save by moving from California to Texas.
When you compare quality of life between LA and Clemson it’s not even a competition! Clemson wins that competition hands-down!

Maybe some of these wounds can be healed based on what has happened over the last few years. There should have been a twenty year celebration of the 2002 Clemson baseball team and all they accomplished. Maybe if we bring in Bakich the Clemson baseball family/culture can be whole again.

Were we waiting to hear from / interview Jarrett? Because if it was Bakich why not last weekend or earlier this week? Maybe Neff was just doing his due diligence but it seems like we may have missed on our first target.

I'm not against the hire. I was just wondering out loud why maybe we didn't hire him a little bit sooner? Michigan's last game was June 6. Seems like in 8 days we would have made the offer.
So either we were waiting to speak to someone else or he's stringing us along to see what kinda of raise he can get at Michigan or to see if another school would want him? Maybe he wants all of his options available before making his decision.
Just pondering and not throwing shade at Neff or our search or at Bakich. Just wondering what other Clemson fans were thinking on the subject.

I think you missed the point of both the New Testament AND the crucifixion.
Jesus wasn’t a wild-eyed revolutionary, nor an anti-establishment ranter, nor even a critic of corruption; he stated repeatedly that he was here to “do the will of His Father”, and that those who believe in Him would also seek to “do the will of the Father.”
Any revolutionary, anti-establishment or anti-corruption messages He lived out were not because He was a rebel and a misfit or wanted to cure social inequities, but because He wanted to demonstrate that only submission to the Father can bring grace in our dealings with people.
Woke-ists miss Jesus’ entire point, because they refuse to submit to anybody. And Woke Christians submit to the wrong God.

I think I understand it, and if I don’t, you don’t have to worry about it, God and I will sort it out when it’s my turn to be judged.
Although maybe you misconstrue the meaning of ‘woke’. Being ‘woke’ isn’t the same as being an activist. Being ‘woke’ is about being hyper aware of the world around you in profound and deep way that is independent of cultural standards. Your are associating it with the much simpler mainstream media definition of a left wing activist. Disassociate those ideas, they aren’t the same. If you’ve read the Allegory of the Cave, that’s what woke is. And Jesus is the only person to ever leave the cave.
Brother, Jesus was the wokeist to ever live. He experienced and understood life on a frequency we cannot dream of.
Sorry if you didn’t like my choice of words, but you’ll be okay.

You’re saying “woke” is literally a Christian term? Or are you just appropriating it to use in a Christian way?
Either way, I’ll check out the Allegory of the Cave. Thanks for posting.
But if it’s another Og Mandino-type way to make Christianity more relevant, I’ll be really disappointed. We don’t need a new way to make Christianity relevant; Christianity needs to make us more relevant. (by making us more like Christ.)

Nah, Allegory of the Cave is a story by Plato. It doesn’t have anything to do with Christianity specifically but the lessons can be applied all over the place.
Yeah I’m just using the original definition of woke. Just chose the phrase as a joke since OPs post implied that being woke and being Christian are mutually exclusive concepts when they clearly aren’t.

Sorry that I lost track which post prompted this response.
If it was mine, you’re darn right why people turn away from Christianity: serving Christ is an act of humility geared toward eternal goals, not a resume enhancer for the here-and-now. One of the worst things Christians ever did was to turn Christianity into a marketing tool. I’m not saying that it didn’t have some positive benefits, but it turned us all into shallow culture warrior-wannabes instead of committed disciples.

I think Clemson would be Jarrett’s 3rd choice behind ND and FSU. So idk what the point would be to get him at this point and I think in order to get him we’d have to drive our price up for the job. I don’t think he’d be all in to use the football coach’s saying.

Or maybe we've been waiting to speak to Godwin? East Carolina's season just ended. Maybe we spoke with him and decided there wasn't mutual interest or maybe we decided we preferred Bakich. We may never get clarification.

Why would someone rather coach baseball at Notre Dame over Clemson? Clemson has far more tradition, a top 10 stadium, until recently top 10 in attendance every year, better weather, far more talent locally that’s easier to recruit. I mean comparing Notre Dame baseball to Clemson baseball is a joke.

although WE consider Clemson an elite baseball school, the last several years say otherwise. That is why AD Neff is trying to land an established major school coach this time around. It won't be that easy to lure one here.

Jarrett was probably first target. Clemson was probably waiting for notre dame to get done playing. But FSU saw the writing on the wall. FSU making the move it did makes me believe we were a threat to get him. But after seeing FSU fire JR over there Clemson probably wisely moved on.

If fans expect a new coach to come and make much difference they may be disappointed. Baseball recruiting is very hard and to expect a new coach, from an entirely different region of the country, to be a miracle worker is a hard sell. The difference between us being in the tournament and not was probably 3 or 4 plays over the course of the season. I hope for the best but will remain realistic that in any given year, the number of teams that compete for tournament spots goes up.

I think we had a good team. Great group of players we just need someone help them improve and not regress. If Wagner comes back out whole infield will be back and Grice and Taylor in the outfield. Corbitt dh.

Link is about to get a big boost on his ND contract and if Neff waits around on the CWS he could miss on other candidates…or at least let them know they weren’t the top choice by waiting out Link.
I’d be happy with Bakich but I doubt he wants to play second fiddle considering he’s been to Omaha and is a Clemson guy.

Thanks for the update sir!
Quick question though: why not just get Tigernet to issue one of those squiggly infinity thingys for your points? 717,519…Humblebrag much?

Well the more I read about him the more I like him. I didnt realize how much the weather and such played into recruiting the northern school.. I mean I knew it was an obstacle but I figured for smaller schools.. not michigan. I am looking forward to seeing what he can do!
